Chapter 16 - The Apology from Beyond

Dad raised his head slowly, his eyes bloodshot as he stared at the note card in my hand.
“Maggie...” Dad repeated softly, his voice trembling. “Richard grew up in the same small town as your mother in Dutchess County. I had completely forgotten.”
“They knew each other as children?” I asked.
“Yes,” Eleanor confirmed, leaning against the bookshelf. “Richard mentioned once that he knew Margaret before she met you, Tom. But he always made it sound like they were just distant school acquaintances.”
“They weren't just acquaintances,” Dad said, a realization dawning on his face. “They were childhood neighbors. When Richard’s family fell on hard times in the seventies, Margaret’s father gave Richard his first summer job at the farm.”
The pieces of the thirty-year-old puzzle were finally clicking into place.
My mother hadn't just given sixty thousand dollars to a random business associate—she had tried to rescue a childhood friend who was spiraling into financial ruin, using her own inheritance to protect his family from losing their home.
“Did Richard ever pay her back, Tom?” Eleanor asked quietly.
Dad wiped his face with his handkerchief and shook his head. “No. When Richard’s company collapsed in 1996, the bank recovered what it could from his commercial assets. Margaret’s sixty thousand dollars vanished completely into the bankruptcy pool.”
“And that’s why Mom was so quiet during those years,” I realized softly. “She carried the guilt of losing her parents' inheritance in secret, never telling Dad because she was trying to protect him from the anger.”
“She was protecting all of us,” Dad whispered, looking up at the ceiling. “She bore that heavy burden entirely on her own shoulders.”

Eleanor reached into the banker’s box once more, her hand hovering over a small, thick yellow envelope tucked into the bottom corner.
“There is one more item in this box, Tom,” Eleanor said, her voice dropping into an ominous hush. “And this one was never opened.”
