Chapter 15 - Margaret's Letter

|

I held the letter with utmost care, reading the faded ink aloud so my father and Eleanor could hear every word.

“Richard,

I am enclosing the cashier’s check for sixty thousand dollars from my parents' estate. As we agreed, this money must remain strictly confidential. Thomas has no knowledge that I am using these funds, and I will not involve him unless it becomes absolutely necessary.

I am trusting you because you promised me that Eleanor’s home and your family’s safety were at risk if you could not secure this bridge loan. Please do not make me regret helping your family.

— Margaret.”

Silence filled the study.

Dad leaned against the edge of the desk, burying his face in his hands as quiet tears spilled through his fingers.

“She did it to save them,” Dad sobbed quietly. “She thought she was helping a family in trouble...”

“And Richard lost every single penny of it,” Eleanor said bitterly, tears streaming down her own cheeks. “He took her generosity, threw it into a failing project, and lied to her when it went under.”

I stroked my father’s back, feeling an overwhelming wave of sadness for my mother. She had tried to perform a quiet act of immense mercy, only to be betrayed by a man who was drowning in his own greed.

“Wait,” I said, spotting another folded piece of paper inside the folder pocket. “There’s a response.”

I pulled out a small, yellowed note card. It bore Richard Sterling’s corporate letterhead.

“Maggie,

I cannot express my gratitude enough. Eleanor must never know where this money came from—she is too proud to accept help from friends. I give you my solemn word that I will restore the full amount to your trust account before anyone is harmed. I am deeply sorry for bringing you into my storm.

— Richard.”

Maggie.

My eyes widened. My father stopped breathing.

Nobody ever called my mother "Maggie"—except the people who had known her during her childhood in upstate New York.
