Chapter 6 - The Confrontation

I couldn't wait any longer. When I got back to the penthouse that night, Evan was sitting at the kitchen island, nursing a glass of expensive bourbon.

I dropped my purse on the counter and threw the Larkspur Strategies file directly onto the marble beside his glass.

“Three weeks until the wedding, Evan,” I said, my voice echoing in the large, empty apartment. “Is that when you planned to drain the rest of the operational accounts, or were you going to wait until the honeymoon?”

Evan looked at the file. He didn't flinch. He didn't gasp. He just took a slow sip of his bourbon.

“You’ve been snooping,” he said calmly.

“You forged my electronic signature! You and your mother stole two point three million dollars from my company!”

Evan stood up, rounding the kitchen island. I instinctively took a step back, but he closed the distance, backing me against the refrigerator.

“After Saturday, it’s family money,” he said, his voice a low, terrifying hum. “You’re going to sign a voting proxy giving me control of the board, and you’re going to permanently stop the upcoming quarterly audit.”

“And if I don’t?” I challenged, my nails pressing so hard into my palms they left crescent-moon indentations. “I will go to the police. I will ruin you.”

Evan leaned in, his breath hot against my ear.

“Your father cut corners, Mara. Major structural corners on the downtown high-rise projects. If you go to the cops, I will release falsified documents proving your father bribed city inspectors. People can be persuaded to remember things. Do you really want your beloved father’s legacy dragged through federal court? Do you want his name destroyed?”

He pulled back, smiling. “Be a good girl. Plan your wedding. I’ll handle the business.”
