Chapter 15 - The Slap

The cathedral erupted into chaotic whispers.

Evan’s carefully constructed mask completely shattered. The arrogant prince vanished, replaced by a desperate, cornered animal.

“You shut your mouth,” Evan hissed, grabbing my upper arm. His fingers dug painfully into my skin.

“I will not repeat them,” I said, looking him dead in the eye, refusing to break eye contact. “I am calling off the wedding.”

Evan slapped me.

The sound of his hand striking my cheek cracked through the audio system like a whip. My head snapped violently to the side, and the sharp edge of my tooth bit deep into my lower lip. The metallic taste of blood flooded my mouth.

Someone in the third row screamed. A hundred cell phones instantly rose into the air, cameras flashing as guests recorded the violence.

Evan seized my elbow, desperately trying to pull me against his chest, attempting to disguise the assault as a sudden medical emergency or a private, firm correction.

“Look what you made me do,” he breathed into my ear, his voice trembling with fury.

Lucinda didn't rush to my aid. She stood perfectly still, laughing—a sharp, pleased sound that cut through the horrified silence of the crowd. “Now she’ll learn obedience,” she muttered loud enough for the first few rows to hear.

Blood dripped from my chin, staining the pristine white silk of my dress. I reached up and wiped it away with my thumb. For one unsteady second, I felt my father’s presence, his strong hands guiding mine over a blueprint.

Evan mistook my silence for submission. He exhaled a shaky breath, assuming the violence had broken my spirit.

Then, his smartwatch lit up beneath his tuxedo cuff.
