Chapter 29

A week later, I drove out to the peaceful, rolling hills of the Boulder cemetery. The morning sun was warm, cutting through the crisp mountain air. I carried a large bouquet of vibrant yellow sunflowers—Evan’s absolute favorite.
I walked along the quiet stone path until I reached his grave. The headstone was elegant and simple, just the way he would have wanted it.
Evan Bennett. Beloved Husband, Devoted Father, Hero.
I knelt on the soft grass, placing the sunflowers gently at the base of the stone.
"Hi, Ev," I whispered, tracing the letters of his name with my fingertips. "We did it. Julian is going away forever. The bridge is being rebuilt safely. Your name is cleared."
I sat there for a long time, talking to him. I told him about Lily, how she was growing so fast, how she had his crooked smile and his stubborn determination. I told him about the foundation, and the scholarship we had created in his name.
"You would be so embarrassed by all the attention," I laughed softly, wiping a tear from my eye. "You always hated the spotlight. But you deserve it, Evan. You saved so many people."
I closed my eyes, letting the quiet peace of the cemetery wash over me. I felt his presence, not as a sharp, agonizing grief, but as a warm, comforting blanket wrapping around my shoulders. He was proud of me. I knew it in the deepest part of my soul.

"I miss you," I whispered to the wind. "I will always love you. But I’m okay now. We are okay. I promise I’m going to give Lily the most beautiful life imaginable."
I stood up, brushing the grass from my knees. I looked at the headstone one last time, a profound sense of closure settling into my heart. I wasn't leaving him behind; I was carrying his memory forward into the light.
