Chapter 9 - The Revelation

|

The word hung in the air like a detonation.

Wife.

My mother’s mouth opened and closed silently, resembling a fish pulled from water. She looked wildly from Julian to me, and then down to my left hand, where my simple, elegant wedding band sat quietly beside the diamond engagement ring I usually turned inward when around my family.

"Wife?" my mother choked out, her voice barely a whisper. "Meredith... you're married to Julian Vance?"

"For three years," I confirmed calmly.

My father, having managed to sidestep the security guard, pushed his way back to the front. He looked completely bewildered, his mind desperately trying to compute the sheer magnitude of the situation.

"Meredith, this is... this is absurd," my father stammered, trying to laugh it off as a bizarre joke. "Why would you keep something like this a secret? Why wasn't he at the family dinners? Why wasn't this in the papers?"

Julian turned his cold, penetrating gaze onto my father.

"Meredith kept our marriage private because my security protocols demand absolute discretion, Mr. Campbell," Julian stated, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "But more importantly, she kept it private because she knew exactly how you operate. She knew you would immediately attempt to leverage my name and my companies for your own personal, financial gain."

My father bristled, his ego bruised. "That is an outrageous accusation. We are a respectable family—"

"You are a family that just publicly humiliated and physically shoved my wife into a fountain for your own amusement," Julian interrupted, his voice cracking like a whip across the silent ballroom. "I watched the security footage from the terrace cameras on my way here. I saw exactly what kind of 'respectable' family you are."

A collective gasp echoed through the room. The guests who had laughed at me earlier suddenly looked incredibly interested in their shoes.

Allison, the forgotten bride, finally stepped forward, her face flushed with a toxic mixture of jealousy and anger. Her perfect day was being entirely hijacked by the sister she despised.

"This is my wedding!" Allison shrilled, glaring at me. "You always find a way to ruin everything, Meredith! You couldn't handle the spotlight being on me for one single day, so you hired some billionaire actor to crash my reception?"

Julian actually laughed. It was a dark, humorless sound.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek, heavy black card, tossing it casually onto a nearby cocktail table. It bore the unmistakable, embossed crest of Vance Global.

"I can assure you, Allison, I am very real," Julian said coldly. "And frankly, I find your desperation for attention pathetic. But since you are so concerned about the spotlight, let's talk about the reality of your situation."
