Chapter 8 - The Arrival

|

His name was Julian Vance.

To the world, he was the elusive, notoriously private CEO of Vance Global, a multinational technology and defense contractor conglomerate. To my family, he was a billionaire titan they had desperately, unsuccessfully tried to secure meetings with for years to boost their own social and financial standing.

But to me, he was simply the man who made my coffee every morning and kissed my forehead before I left for work.

He strode into the ballroom with absolute, terrifying confidence. He wore a bespoke, midnight-blue tuxedo that fit him flawlessly, projecting an aura of power that made the surrounding "old money" wealth look cheap and performative.

Four more security operatives flanked him, creating a seamless, impenetrable bubble around him as he moved directly across the dance floor.

The crowd parted for him instinctively, like water yielding to a ship.

My father was the first to recover his senses. He quickly plastered on a sycophantic, eager smile, practically shoving a guest aside to intercept Julian.

"Mr. Vance!" my father boomed, adopting his most charming, persuasive attorney voice. "What an absolute honor! We had no idea you were in Boston. To what do we owe the immense pleasure of your presence at my daughter's wedding?"

Julian didn't stop walking. He didn't even glance at my father. He merely offered a slight, dismissive wave of his hand, and one of his security operatives smoothly stepped in front of my father, physically blocking his path.

"Excuse me, sir," the operative said firmly. "Please step back."

My father’s face flushed a deep, humiliating red, but he was powerless to argue.

Julian finally stopped when he was exactly two feet away from me. The entire ballroom held its collective breath.

He looked me up and down, taking in the sleek black dress, my damp hair pulled into a severe bun, and the complete lack of fear in my eyes. His gaze softened instantly, a private warmth reserved only for me replacing the icy CEO exterior.

"I told you I'd try to make it before the reception ended," Julian said, his deep voice carrying easily in the silent room.

He reached out and gently cupped my cheek, his thumb lightly brushing the skin right next to where I had hit the stone fountain. His eyes darkened dangerously for a fraction of a second, registering the faint, angry red mark forming there.

"Are you hurt?" he asked quietly, the question laced with a lethal, unspoken threat directed at the entire room.

"I'm perfectly fine, Julian," I smiled, leaning into his touch. "Just a little wet earlier."

He nodded slowly, his jaw clenching. He leaned down and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to my lips, entirely ignoring the hundreds of shocked gasps that erupted around us.

When he pulled back, he finally turned his attention to my mother, who was standing frozen mere feet away, looking as though she might faint.

"Mrs. Campbell, I presume?" Julian asked, his tone polite but chillingly cold. "I am Julian Vance. It's a rather... revealing experience to finally meet the people my wife grew up with."
