CHAPTER 9: THE STEEL MANDATE
The flashing blue lights arrived before he could take another aggressive step toward us.
Detective Vance had been monitoring my father’s cell phone location due to his outstanding court mandates. Violating the protective order I had filed weeks ago was his final mistake.
Two uniformed officers slammed him against the wet hood of a police cruiser.
The sharp, metallic click of the steel handcuffs locking around his wrists was exceptionally loud against the downpour.
He looked back at me over his shoulder, his face pale and ruined. He was hoping for a tear, expecting a daughter’s built-in guilt to save him at the absolute last second.
But my eyes remained entirely dry.
“Evelyn… please, I’m your father,” he choked out.
I adjusted the collar of my coat and looked away from him.
“Your severance from this family was paid a long time ago,” I said coldly.

The final piece of generational trauma had just broken completely.
