CHAPTER 20: THE UNWANTED HOMECOMING

A blast of cold rain and wet wind slammed down into the vault as a silhouette descended the ladder.

It wasn't a mercenary.

It was my father.

His orange jumpsuit was covered by a muddy dark raincoat, his face gaunt, his eyes wide with a volatile, manic energy. He held a silver handgun in his shaking hand, the barrel pointing directly at my chest.

“Where is it, Evelyn?” he rasped, his teeth chattering from the mountain cold.

“Where is the 1974 volume?”

I stood perfectly still beside the empty military chest, my hands tucked into my coat pockets.

“It’s already gone, Dad,” I said, my voice deadpan and calm.

“Chelsea is taking it to the federal task force right now.”

He took a frantic step forward, the weapon tracking my face.

“You ruined me!” he screamed, his voice breaking with a terrifying, unhinged rage.

“I built a multi-million-dollar empire for this family! I gave you everything!”

“You gave us a cage lined with lies,” I countered, my voice echoing off the concrete walls.

“You pushed my daughter onto a marble floor to protect your stock options.”

“And now, your empire is nothing but white dust.”

May you like

He raised the weapon, his finger tightening around the trigger.

“I’ll burn this entire valley to the ground before I let you take my freedom,” he growled.
