Chapter 7: The Video Testimony

Chapter 7: The Video Testimony

Emily turned around slowly, facing her biological sisters. Victoria was still trying to maintain her arrogant, unbothered posture, but her lower lip was trembling uncontrollably.

“What about this video recorder, Mr. Daniel?” Emily asked, her voice hushed.

Daniel walked over and tapped the power button on the small device. “Mrs. Eleanor left a final statement meant for all three of you.”

The small digital screen flickered to life. Eleanor appeared on the display. The video had clearly been recorded only a few weeks prior, during a brief window when she still possessed enough strength to sit upright in her armchair by the window. Her face was painfully thin, her skin translucent, but her hazel eyes remained bright and piercing.

“Emily,” Eleanor’s weak but unmistakable voice echoed from the small speaker. “If you are watching this, I know your heart is breaking. I am so deeply sorry I could not fight hard enough to stay with you longer.”

Emily covered her mouth with both hands, trying to stifle her cries. On the screen, Eleanor’s gaze suddenly shifted, looking directly into the camera lens with a profound, crushing intensity.

“Victoria. Claire,” the old woman said, her voice turning firm. “If you are standing there listening to this, I want you to know that I sat in this empty house and waited for you for a very long time. I didn't wait for you to achieve grand success, and I didn't wait for you to pay back the fortunes you took. I only waited for the day one of my daughters would walk through that front door, look at my sick face, and simply ask: ‘Mom, are you in pain?’ But that day never came.”

Victoria lowered her head, her gaze dropping to the floorboards. Claire turned her face away entirely, staring blankly down the empty corridor.

“I was foolish to believe that money could ever make up for my absence during your childhood,” Eleanor continued on the recording, a look of deep sorrow crossing her weathered features. “I gave you endless material things, but I failed to teach you how to value love. That was my ultimate failure as a mother. But my past mistakes do not give you the right to destroy innocent people.”

The old woman leaned slightly closer to the camera.

“Emily did not steal a single thing from you. She gave me the most peaceful, loved-filled final years of my life. While you two were busy calculating the value of my inheritance, she was learning how to love me. While you saw this estate as a piece of real estate to be liquidated, she saw it as a home. Therefore, I declare my final will clearly:

The Whitmore estate and the entire rose garden belong exclusively to Emily. The Whitmore Charity Fund will be entirely dismantled and rebuilt into a legitimate foundation for orphans and abandoned elderly people, managed solely by Emily under Daniel’s legal supervision for the first three years.”

“All remaining corporate shares will be permanently transferred into the foundation's trust,” Eleanor added, her tone leaving zero room for negotiation. “Victoria and Claire will receive absolutely no direct inheritance from my estate. However, because I am still your mother, I leave you one final grace: if, within one year, you voluntarily surrender what you wrongfully siphoned and commit to working at least six months of community service at the new foundation, you will receive a modest, fixed monthly allowance. Enough to start over—without relying on greed.”

Victoria’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with indignation. “This is insane! She can't do this to us!”

On the digital screen, Eleanor smiled sadly, as if she had perfectly anticipated her daughter's exact words.

“If you believe this arrangement is cruel, Victoria, remember this: Emily lived in this very house for sixteen long years without a single legal guarantee of belonging. And yet, every single day, she chose to stay and love this family anyway. Kindness is not weakness, girls. And forgiveness does not mean handing the key back to the people who tried to burn down your home.”

The screen flickered softly as Eleanor raised her thin, pale hand toward the camera lens, attempting to touch the glass.

“Emily, my sweet girl... I do not want you to spend your life seeking revenge on them. Just live kindly, protect your heart, and never allow anyone to trample on your spirit again. From the very first afternoon I saw you sitting by that orphanage window, I knew: you were never a child I took in out of pity. You were the daughter I had been searching for my entire life.”

The monitor faded into a solid, heavy black.
