Chapter 1: The Final Breath and The Mysterious Key

Mrs. Eleanor’s phone lit up at the exact moment the hospital room fell silent.

Emily was still holding her adoptive mother’s hand, feeling it slowly turn cold. Her tears fell onto the white hospital blanket, leaving small, blurred stains behind. In her other hand, she clutched an old key. It was made of tarnished bronze and felt icy to the touch—the very key Mrs. Eleanor had tremblingly placed into her palm just before her eyes closed forever.

There was a single name deeply engraved on the metal.

Emily.

Before she could even begin to understand what it meant, the phone beside the pillow suddenly glowed. A short message appeared on the screen—brief, anonymous, and terrifying:

“Don’t let them open that room.”

Emily froze, her breath catching in her throat.

The hospital room door was wide open. Victoria and Claire—Eleanor’s two biological daughters—stood only a few steps away from the bed. Neither of them was crying. Neither asked the doctor whether their mother had been in pain. Neither bent down to hold her hand one last time.

Instead, their eyes were fixed like vultures on the bronze key in Emily’s hand.

Victoria reacted first. She rushed forward, her sharp nails digging into Emily’s wrist.

“Give it to me,” Victoria hissed.

Emily pulled her hand back, pressing the key firmly against her chest. “No.”

Claire let out a sharp, mocking laugh, her eyes red not from grief, but from sheer anger.

“Who do you think you are?” Claire snapped, stepping closer. “A girl she picked up from nowhere, and now you think you can keep something that belongs to our mother?”

Emily did not answer. She only turned back to look at the peaceful face of the woman who had just left this world—the woman who had given her a real home when the rest of the world had treated her like an unwanted burden.

“Mom gave it to me,” Emily said, her voice trembling but clear. “She wanted me to have it.”

Victoria tightened her grip on her designer handbag, her face pale with rage. “My mother was seriously ill, Emily. She wasn’t thinking clearly. You manipulated her, didn’t you? You made her hide the will, the money, the property—all for yourself!”

Victoria turned sharply to her sister. “Claire, call the lawyer. Call him right now.”
