Chapter 9 - The Shell Game

|

Understanding Richard’s financial labyrinth required me to dissect the very foundation of Horizon Prime Developers.

Sitting in the dim light of my home office that evening, I cross-referenced the documents I had photographed with the public tax filings of Horizon Prime. It took hours of meticulous, agonizing focus, but the architecture of his betrayal slowly revealed itself on my screen.

Richard wasn't just hiding money to support Evelyn and Leo. He was actively draining our legitimate marital estate to build a completely separate empire for his second family.

The LLC that owned the Connecticut house—Apex Horizon Holdings—was listed as a subsidiary vendor for Horizon Prime. Richard was signing off on massive, inflated invoices for "consulting and development services" rendered by Apex. Horizon Prime was paying millions of dollars to a ghost company, which then transferred the clean, laundered cash directly into the Cayman Island trust.

A trust explicitly named The Leo Heritage Fund.

He was stealing from his own company, and by extension, stealing from Stella’s future, to ensure his illegitimate son inherited a fortune.

The audacity of the theft left a bitter, metallic taste in my mouth. Richard was a brilliant developer, but his arrogance had made him sloppy. He believed he was the smartest man in every room, assuming no one—especially not his quiet, agreeable wife—would ever possess the intellect to follow the paper trail.

But I needed the final piece of the puzzle. I had the account numbers, but I needed the digital authorization keys to intercept the next massive transfer scheduled for the end of the month.

I looked at the clock. It was 6:00 AM. Richard was still "in Chicago," and his assistant, Clare Mitchell, was a creature of absolute habit. Every morning at 7:15, she stopped at a boutique coffee shop three blocks from the Horizon Prime tower to order a specific, ridiculously complicated matcha latte before heading up to the executive suite.

I closed my laptop, grabbed my coat, and stepped out into the freezing city dawn. I was going to intercept the woman who had tried to humiliate me in the lobby, and I was not going to leave without the keys to my husband's kingdom.
