Chapter 20 - The Unseen Horizon

|

The private jet climbed smoothly above the gray clouds, breaking into the brilliant, blinding blue of the upper atmosphere.

I sat in the plush leather seat, sipping a glass of sparkling water, watching the city of New York shrink into insignificance far below. Stella was fast asleep in the seat across from me, her small head resting on a pillow, holding her favorite stuffed animal.

We were not flying to my mother’s house. We were flying to Geneva, where an untraceable fortune and a completely new life waited for us. I had legally changed our names, severed every tie to the Vance empire, and secured an international firewall between my daughter and the monster who fathered her.

I took a deep, cleansing breath, feeling the crushing weight of the last six years finally lift from my shoulders. I had survived the betrayal, dismantled the lie, and emerged victorious.

Meanwhile, sitting in the darkness of the empty brownstone, Richard stared blankly at the wall, completely destroyed. The silence was maddening.

Suddenly, the burner phone in his pocket vibrated.

He pulled it out, a desperate, pathetic spark of hope flaring in his chest. Maybe it was Evelyn. Maybe she had calmed down and was willing to listen to his excuses.

He looked at the screen. It was an unknown international number.

With trembling fingers, he answered the call.

“Hello?” Richard croaked, his voice raw.

“Mr. Vance,” a deep, heavily accented voice echoed through the speaker. The tone was professional, cold, and utterly terrifying. “We represent the primary investors of the Apex Horizon Holdings account. We noticed a substantial transfer of eight million dollars was routed to a Swiss entity yesterday, bypassing our agreed-upon laundering protocols.”

Richard’s blood ran entirely cold. The offshore account. He hadn't just been hiding marital assets; he had been moving money for highly dangerous, invisible partners to fund his luxury lifestyle.

“I… I didn't authorize that transfer,” Richard stammered, true, paralyzing terror finally gripping his soul. “My wife… she hacked the system, she stole the money!”

“We do not care about your domestic disputes, Mr. Vance,” the voice replied smoothly, the sound of a gun slide racking faintly in the background. “We only care about our money. You have exactly twenty-four hours to return the eight million dollars. If you do not, we will collect our debt in blood.”

The line went dead.

Richard dropped the phone, staring into the dark, empty house, realizing that Victoria hadn't just taken his empire and his family. She had left him completely defenseless against the wolves he had invited to the door.
