CHAPTER 7: JUSTICE SPEAKS

Two months later, the case was finally brought to criminal court. The defense lawyer's attempts to blame her actions on "caregiver burnout" completely failed.

The evidence we and the police had gathered was overwhelming.

The medical reports detailing my mother's irregular heart rate spikes. The ironclad testimonies of the nurses on duty. The security footage showing her highly suspicious behavioral pattern. The financial records exposing Marissa's clear motive. And especially the threatening text messages recovered from her phone, where she had texted her lover: "This old hag is too stubborn. I'm going to have to handle it myself so we can get the money sooner."

The sheer volume of evidence was so massive that no jury could ignore it.

The courtroom fell into a suffocating silence when the Judge struck the gavel and read the verdict.

"Marissa Vance, the jury finds the defendant guilty on all charges, including elder abuse, financial fraud, and attempted murder."

The sharp crack of the gavel echoed. 15 years in federal prison without the possibility of parole.

As the officers handcuffed Marissa and led her away, she turned to look at me. In that brief moment, I tried to search for a faint glimmer of the woman I used to love passionately. A look of remorse, a genuine tear.

But I found nothing. Her eyes were empty, cold, and cruel.

Perhaps the loving wife I thought I had, had never existed in this world at all.
