Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

I watched the high-definition monitor in absolute, paralyzed horror. The air in the climate-controlled security room felt suddenly thin, as if someone had sucked all the oxygen out of the tiny space. My heart hammered a violent, sickening rhythm against my ribs.
"Get your hands off me, you filthy immigrant!" Chloe shrieked, her voice echoing through the hidden audio feeds.
She violently yanked her arm away from Marisol's gentle grip. The sudden, aggressive movement caused Chloe to stumble backward in her designer heels, her face contorting into an ugly mask of pure, unfiltered rage.
Marisol did not flinch. She did not lower her eyes. She stood perfectly straight, her body still acting as a physical shield between my furious fiancée and my trembling daughters.
"You do not touch them," Marisol said. Her voice was remarkably calm, but beneath the quiet tone lay a core of absolute steel. "You can yell at me all you want, Miss Chloe. But you will not put your hands on these children."
"I am the lady of this house!" Chloe screamed, her chest heaving. "I am going to be their mother! I can discipline them however I see fit, and there is absolutely nothing a minimum-wage maid can do to stop me!"
Valeria was crying now, silent tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she pulled Sofia tighter against her chest.
"You are not their mother," Marisol replied softly. "And as long as I am standing here, you will not hurt them."
"You're fired!" Chloe pointed a shaking finger at the front door. "Pack your bags and get out of this house right now! If you aren't gone in ten minutes, I'm calling the police and telling them you assaulted me!"

Hector, my head of security, placed a heavy hand on my shoulder. "Mr. Vance. Give the word."
"Unlock the door," I whispered, my voice trembling with a rage so profound it terrified me. "I have seen enough."
