Chapter 17 - The Confession

“I proposed the fifty-million-dollar settlement,” Grant continued, his voice steady and resolute. “I did so after conducting an eighteen-month affair with my subordinate. I did so after concealing crucial medical information from my wife, and allowing my family to blame her for infertility issues that were entirely my fault.”
Gasps echoed through the ballroom. The journalists scrambled, typing furiously on their laptops.
Evelyn jumped out of her seat. “Grant! Stop this nonsense immediately!”
He ignored her, his eyes locked on the cameras. “My former wife endured years of agonizing fertility treatments, invasive surgeries, and a devastating miscarriage completely without my support. I offered her the money because I wanted a fast, quiet divorce before my mistress gave birth. Claire accepted the amount I proposed and fulfilled every legal requirement with total grace.”
Evelyn marched toward the stage, her face twisted in absolute fury. “Cut his microphone!” she screamed at the AV crew.
Grant pointed directly at her.
“And my mother knew about my genetic condition before I did. She intentionally hid the clinical reports because protecting the Whitmore pride mattered more to her than protecting my wife's sanity.”
Two security guards stepped in, physically blocking Evelyn from reaching the stage. She thrashed against them, screaming obscenities, looking entirely unhinged in front of the most powerful investors in the city.
The entire confession was broadcast live on financial networks.
I watched it from my office in San Diego. Noah stood behind me, his hands resting gently on my shoulders.
When the chaos in the room peaked, a reporter shouted over the noise, “Mr. Whitmore! Do you want your wife back?”
Grant looked exhausted, hollowed out, but finally honest.
“Yes,” he said into the mic. “But wanting someone does not give you the right to have them.” Then, he stepped away from the podium and walked out.
The confession sent Whitmore Luxe’s stock tumbling for a week, but it saved them from an SEC investigation regarding the divorce funds. More importantly, it permanently destroyed Evelyn’s social reign. The charity board demanded her resignation by the end of the day.

Grant had finally chosen the truth over his mother. It was a beautiful act of bravery.
It was just eleven years too late.
