Chapter 13 - The Invitation

The email from Madison contained zero personal pleasantries. It was strictly business: budgets, spatial requirements, and aggressive deadlines. She had apparently returned to Whitmore Luxe as a creative consultant while raising the twins, and she wanted Bennett Spatial Design to bid on renovating their flagship jewelry boutiques in Los Angeles and Chicago.
I stared at the screen for twenty minutes. I accepted the contract, not because Madison deserved my grace, but because the budget was massive and my portfolio needed the prestige.
A week later, the stakes elevated.
A senior producer from a nationally syndicated morning television program called Second Chances reached out to me. They were running a week-long special on women who had reinvented themselves after high-profile, catastrophic divorces. They wanted me on the show.
I immediately wanted to decline. I had spent years guarding the Whitmore family secrets.
But the producer’s words struck a nerve. “This isn’t a gossip segment about a discarded, barren wife, Claire. This is a story about a woman who stopped letting a powerful family define her worth.”
The interview would have to be recorded live in their New York studio.
That evening, I was sitting at my kitchen island, staring blankly at the TV contract. Noah walked in carrying a steaming cardboard container of my favorite spicy rigatoni. He set it down, took one look at the paperwork, and sat across from me.
“Are you ready to go back to New York?” he asked quietly.
“I don’t know.”
“That wasn't my question.”
I looked up at him. He was right. Running away from New York and choosing to return to it as a successful, independent woman were two entirely different concepts. If I stayed in California out of fear, Evelyn still won.
“I’m ready,” I said, signing the release form.
The next morning, a FedEx envelope arrived at my studio. The return address was New Jersey. Madison.

Inside was a single photograph of the twins—Benjamin looking chubby and healthy, and Samuel, still small but breathing without tubes, smiling up at the camera. Tucked behind the photo was a handwritten note.
Claire. I know from the corporate office that you are flying to New York next week. Grant knows, too. I think he plans to ambush you after the interview. Be careful. There is something he has never told you about the night our affair began. You deserve the whole truth.
