Chapter 15 - The Ultimatum

|

The peace of the estate was shattered two weeks before Christmas.

Clara was in the kitchen, helping Mrs. Dora plan the holiday menu, when Milo burst through the back doors. He was bleeding from a cut above his eye, his suit torn.

"Lock down the house," Milo barked to the guards stationed in the hall. "Where is the boss?"

"In the library," Clara said, her heart leaping into her throat. "Milo, what happened?"

"The Calabrians," Milo spat, drawing his weapon. "They hit the docks. They're making a move for the territory."

Clara ran to the library. Raphael was already strapping a shoulder holster over his crisp white shirt, his face an emotionless mask of pure, lethal violence. The gentle man who played with pebbles on the rug was gone. The monster had returned.

"Take Noel down to the wine cellar," Raphael ordered Clara without looking at her. "Lock the steel door. Do not come out until I come for you."

"Raphael, what's happening?" Clara pleaded, grabbing his arm.

He stopped, looking down at her hand on his sleeve. He reached up, gently brushing his knuckles against her cheek.

"The families who backed Judge Moretti are trying to finish what he started," Raphael explained softly. "They think without an alliance, I am vulnerable. I need to go to the harbor to remind them that I am not."

"You could be killed," Clara whispered, the fear tightening her chest.

"I won't be," Raphael promised, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "Because I have a reason to come back now."

He turned and walked out of the library, shouting orders to his men as he moved toward the front doors.

Clara didn't freeze. She ran upstairs, grabbed a terrified Noel from the sewing room, and rushed down into the heavy, fortified wine cellar. She locked the steel door, holding her trembling daughter in the dark, praying to a God she hadn't spoken to in years.

The night dragged on in agonizing silence. Clara couldn't hear gunfire, but she could feel the tension vibrating through the foundation of the house.

At 4:00 AM, the heavy steel door of the cellar clicked open.

Clara stood up, grabbing a heavy wine bottle to use as a weapon.

The door swung wide. Raphael stood in the doorway. His suit was ruined, covered in soot and blood. The thin scar on his jaw was bright red against his pale skin. He looked exhausted, battered, and entirely victorious.

"It's over," Raphael said softly, dropping his weapon onto the floor. "They surrendered."

Clara dropped the wine bottle. She didn't think about the boundaries between an estate manager and a mafia boss. She ran across the cellar and threw her arms around his neck.

Raphael caught her instantly, burying his face in her hair, crushing her tightly against his chest. He inhaled sharply, as if she were the only oxygen left in the room.

"You came back," Clara sobbed into his shoulder.

"I promised you I would," Raphael whispered.
