Chapter 14 - The New Normal

|

Life at the Brookline estate changed entirely over the next year.

The house, once a silent, brooding fortress, began to hum with life. Clara embraced her role as estate manager, organizing the staff, managing the accounts, and ensuring the twenty-two rooms no longer felt like empty boxes.

Noel was no longer hidden. She ran freely through the corridors, her laughter echoing off the marble floors. The terrifying men in dark suits who visited Raphael learned very quickly that stepping on a stray crayon or interrupting tea time with a one-eyed cloth horse was a cardinal sin.

Raphael himself began to change.

He still commanded the docks. He still spoke in a voice so quiet it made men tremble. But the cold, solitary isolation he had wrapped himself in slowly began to thaw.

One rainy afternoon in November, Clara was walking past the library carrying a stack of mail. The door was open.

She stopped, completely stunned by the scene inside.

Raphael Duca, the King of the North End, was sitting on the expensive Persian rug. He had taken off his suit jacket and rolled up his sleeves. Sitting across from him was Noel, wearing a plastic tiara over her pink glasses.

Between them on the floor was a massive, sprawling structure built entirely out of smooth river stones.

"No, Mr. Raphael," Noel was saying seriously, pointing a chubby finger. "The tower goes there. So the dragons can't get in."

"I see," Raphael replied gravely, moving a pebble exactly where she indicated. "My mistake. We wouldn't want dragons."

Clara leaned against the doorframe, a soft, overwhelming warmth spreading through her chest. She watched the man who had once terrified her playing on the floor with her daughter.

Raphael looked up, catching her eye. He didn't look embarrassed to be caught playing on the floor. He simply looked at Clara with an expression of profound, quiet peace.

"Are the dragons secure?" Clara asked, stepping into the room.

"For now," Raphael said, standing up gracefully and dusting off his trousers. "Though Noel runs a very strict construction site."

Noel giggled, grabbing her cloth horse and running out of the room to find Mrs. Dora in the kitchen.

Clara and Raphael were left alone in the library. The rain patted softly against the tall windows, a soothing, familiar rhythm.

"You've changed this house, Clara," Raphael said quietly, walking over to his desk.

"The house just needed some noise, sir," Clara smiled.

Raphael looked at the corner of his desk. The crystal glass was there, as it always was. But for the first time in fifteen years, the glass was empty.

Clara noticed it immediately. "The wine..."

"I poured it out last night," Raphael said softly. He looked at Clara, his dark eyes burning with an intense, quiet vulnerability. "I realized I am no longer living for the ghosts of my past. I want to live for the present."
