Chapter 5 - The Mother’s Voice

|

Lorraine stepped out from behind me.

She did not raise her voice. She did not point a finger. She moved with the quiet, devastating dignity of a woman who had spent four decades building a family, only to watch a stranger try to dismantle it for spare parts.

“We know exactly who we are dealing with,” Lorraine said, looking directly into Brooke’s eyes.

Brooke tilted her head, maintaining her arrogant smirk. “Do you, Lorraine?”

“Yes,” my wife answered, her voice a soft, lethal hum. “You are a frightened, empty woman who uses expensive clothes and catered dinners to hide the fact that you have nothing of your own. You ordered me out of this house because my presence reminded you that you are a guest in a life you didn't earn.”

Brooke’s smirk vanished. Her hands clenched slightly at her sides.

Lorraine didn't stop. She turned her gaze to our son.

“And you, Mason,” Lorraine said. The disappointment in her voice was heavier than any anger could ever be.

Mason flinched, unable to meet his mother’s eyes.

“I did not raise a coward,” Lorraine told him softly. “I did not drive you through ice storms and sit awake through asthma attacks to watch you stand silently while your wife throws your mother out of a house your father paid for.”

“Mom, I didn't know,” Mason choked out, a single tear escaping and tracking down his pale cheek. “I swear I didn't know she was going to kick you out.”

“You knew she was trying to take the title,” Lorraine corrected gently, but firmly. “You brought the folder to the table tonight. You knew she was asking us to sign away our property, and you were going to let her do it because you were too afraid to tell her no.”

Mason closed his eyes, his head dropping in profound, crushing shame.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Lorraine reached out, her fingers gently touching his cheek. It was a mother’s touch, filled with love, but completely devoid of absolution.

“Sorry does not repair a broken foundation, Mason,” Lorraine said.

She turned back to me, slipping her arm through mine. Her posture was perfect.

“I am ready to go home, David,” she said.
