Chapter 14 - The Confrontation

|

Sunday afternoon brought an unexpected, violent storm to Dallas. Lightning cracked across the gray sky, rattling the windows of our home.

I was sitting in my study, reviewing the final drafts of the legal dossier Marcus had sent over, when the front doorbell rang aggressively. It wasn't a polite chime; it was a frantic, relentless pressing of the button.

I walked to the foyer and checked the security camera.

Brooke was standing on the porch. She was entirely alone.

She wore a dark trench coat, soaked from the rain, her hair plastered to her face. The meticulously crafted, wealthy socialite facade was completely gone, leaving behind a desperate, feral woman who realized the walls were finally closing in.

I opened the heavy wooden door, keeping the security chain engaged.

“What do you want, Brooke?” I asked coldly.

“Let me in, David,” she demanded, her voice shaking with a mixture of rage and terror. “We need to talk. Now.”

“We have nothing to discuss. You have five seconds to step off my property before I call the police for trespassing.”

“Mason told me you have the investigator's file!” Brooke shrieked, pushing her face close to the gap in the door. The aristocratic mask slipped entirely, exposing the sheer, unadulterated venom beneath. “He told me you’re going to the authorities!”

“Tomorrow morning,” I confirmed smoothly.

“You ruin me, you ruin your son!” she threatened, gripping the doorframe. “He signed some of those early documents, David! I told him they were tax write-offs for his business. His signature is on the LLC incorporation papers. If I go down, I am dragging Mason right into a federal cell with me!”

The air in the foyer turned to ice.

She wasn't just threatening me. She was holding my son hostage with forged complicity.

I calmly unhooked the security chain and opened the door fully. I didn't step back. I towered over her, my presence forcing her to take a physical step backward into the rain.

“You think you are a very clever woman, Brooke,” I said, my voice dropping into a low, terrifying rumble that I rarely used. “You think because you tricked my son into signing a piece of paper, you have leverage.”

“I have proof he was involved,” she hissed, her eyes wild.

“You have a signature obtained under fraudulent pretenses,” I corrected, stepping out onto the covered porch. “And I have a recorded statement from the title company confirming you were the sole point of contact. I have Julian Vance’s emails, addressed exclusively to you. Mason is an idiot, but he is not a mastermind.”

I leaned in, my face inches from hers.

“If you try to implicate my son to save yourself,” I promised softly, “I will personally fund a legal team to bury you so deep under the prison, they will have to pipe sunlight in to you. Do you understand me?”
