Chapter 17 - A New Beginning

The aftermath of the legal battles left a vacuum in the city’s power structure that my father and I began to fill with something entirely new.

We didn't want the empire.

We wanted a system that prevented the empire from ever rising again.

We established a new corporate entity—The Carter-Hale Oversight Group.

Its sole purpose was to perform independent, ethical audits on large-scale property and industrial developments.

We were the watchdog.

We were the ones who ensured that the buildings we lived in were not built on the broken backs of the vulnerable.

It was a slow process, but we were relentless.

We hired lawyers, accountants, and advocates.

We held community meetings.

We fought for stricter regulations.

My father looked like he had found a new life.

He spent his days in the office, his evenings with me, and his weekends working on the foundation.

He had become the mentor I had always wanted.

"You’re doing a good thing," he said one evening.

"I’m doing the right thing."

"And the difference?"

"The difference is that I don't feel like I’m fighting for survival anymore."

"What do you feel like you’re fighting for?"

"For everyone who comes after."

He nodded, a look of profound satisfaction in his eyes.

I stood on the terrace of my apartment.

The city was vast, complex, and full of secrets.

But I wasn't afraid of the secrets anymore.

I was the one who was documenting them.

The bride in the ivory dress was a ghost.

May you like

I was the woman who had come out of the dark.

And I was finally, truly, alive.
