Chapter 9 - The Ghost of the Past

|

The secret romance between Vincent and Nora blossomed in the quiet corners of the estate. It was a stolen happiness, fiercely protected from the dangerous reality outside the compound walls. Vincent was happier than he had been in a decade. Camila was thriving under Nora’s care.

But in the underworld, happiness is often a beacon for tragedy.

It began with a whisper. A rumor circulating through the lower ranks of the syndicate that Vincent Russo was distracted. That he was spending too much time playing house and not enough time running the streets.

The rumors reached the ears of Marco Vane, an ambitious capo who controlled the gambling rackets in the Bronx. Marco had always coveted Vincent's position. He saw Vincent's new relationship not as a strength, but as a fatal weakness.

Marco began quietly recruiting dissidents within the organization, building a coalition to challenge Vincent's leadership.

Vincent, usually hyper-aware of internal dissent, missed the subtle signs. He was too focused on Nora, too focused on the fragile peace he had built.

The betrayal happened on a rainy Thursday night, exactly a year after Nora had swept up the broken glass in the ballroom.

Vincent was hosting a high-stakes poker game at a private club in Manhattan, a routine event to maintain relations with other crime families. Paulie was with him, along with a dozen guards.

Nora was at the estate with Camila.

At 11:00 PM, the doors to the private club burst open.

It wasn't a rival family. It was Marco Vane, leading twenty heavily armed men. They wore tactical gear and carried automatic weapons.

"What is the meaning of this, Marco?" Vincent demanded, standing up slowly, his hand moving toward his concealed weapon.

"New management, Vince," Marco sneered, raising an assault rifle. "You've gotten soft. The commission agrees it's time for a change."

The room erupted in gunfire.

Vincent flipped the heavy poker table, using it as a shield as bullets shredded the expensive upholstery and shattered the crystal chandeliers. Paulie and the loyal guards returned fire, but they were severely outnumbered and outgunned.

"We have to move, Boss!" Paulie yelled over the deafening roar of automatic weapons. "They've got us pinned!"

Vincent fired back, dropping two of Marco's men. "The back exit! Through the kitchens!"

They fought their way out of the room, leaving five loyal guards dead on the floor. Vincent and Paulie burst into the kitchen, bullets sparking off the stainless steel appliances.

They managed to reach the alleyway, but Marco's men were waiting. A spray of bullets caught Paulie in the chest. The underboss collapsed, coughing blood.

"Paulie!" Vincent roared, grabbing his friend and dragging him behind a dumpster.

"Go, Vince," Paulie gasped, his eyes wide with pain. "They're... they're coming for the house. Marco said... he said he was sending a team to the estate to clean house."

Vincent's blood ran cold. The estate. Camila. Nora.

Marco wasn't just taking the syndicate; he was eradicating Vincent's entire world.

"I won't leave you," Vincent said, applying pressure to Paulie's wound.

"You have to," Paulie choked out, his grip on Vincent's arm weakening. "Save them. Save her."

Paulie's eyes went blank. He was gone.

Vincent didn't have time to mourn. He grabbed Paulie's extra magazines and sprinted down the alley, moving with a desperate, terrifying speed. He hijacked a car at gunpoint a block away and tore toward Brookline.

He had to get to Nora before Marco's hit squad did.

The drive felt like an eternity. The rain lashed against the windshield, mirroring the storm raging inside Vincent. He pushed the car to its limits, blowing through red lights and swerving around traffic.

When he reached the estate, the massive iron gates were open.

Vincent's heart plummeted. The guards were gone.

He abandoned the car and sprinted up the driveway, his weapon drawn. He burst through the front doors.

The grand foyer was a war zone. Two of his loyal guards lay dead on the marble floor. The house was eerily silent.

"Nora!" Vincent screamed, his voice raw with panic.

May you like

No answer.

He ran toward the east wing, his boots slipping on the blood slicking the marble.
