Chapter 10 - The Choice

|

Vincent kicked open the door to Camila's suite.

It was empty.

The bed was unmade, the wheelchair overturned. A broken teacup lay shattered on the floor.

"Nora!" Vincent roared again, moving through the rooms like a hunted animal.

He heard a faint sound from the adjoining bathroom. A quiet, muffled whimpering.

Vincent approached the door, his gun raised. He kicked it open.

Nora was huddled in the corner of the large marble bathroom. She had positioned her body completely over Camila, shielding the older woman with her own back. She was trembling violently, her eyes wide with terror, but she held a heavy pair of metal shears in a white-knuckled grip.

When she saw it was Vincent, she dropped the shears and burst into tears.

"Vincent," she sobbed, scrambling up and throwing herself into his arms. "They came... men with guns. They killed Marcus at the front door."

Vincent crushed her against his chest, burying his face in her hair. She was alive. She was safe.

"I've got you," he whispered fiercely. "I've got you."

He looked over her shoulder at his mother. Camila was confused, humming quietly to herself, unaware of the extreme danger she had just survived.

"They're still in the house," Nora said, pulling back, her face pale. "I heard them talking. They're searching the west wing for the safe."

Marco's men weren't just here to kill; they were here to rob him.

Vincent’s fear morphed into a cold, absolute rage. These men had come into his home. They had terrified the women he loved.

"Stay here," Vincent ordered, pressing a spare pistol into Nora's hand. "Lock the door. Do not open it for anyone but me. If anyone else tries to come in, you shoot them."

Nora nodded, gripping the gun tightly. The exhaustion and fear in her eyes had been replaced by a fierce determination. She wasn't just a maid anymore. She was a survivor.

Vincent stepped out of the bathroom and locked the door behind him.

He moved silently through the estate, a predator hunting in his own territory. He knew every shadow, every creaking floorboard, every blind spot.

He found the hit squad in his private study. There were four of them, trying to blow the safe hidden behind a bookshelf.

Vincent didn't offer a warning. He didn't negotiate.

He stepped into the doorway and opened fire.

He dropped the first two men before they even realized he was there. The third man managed to raise his weapon, but Vincent shot him in the shoulder, then the chest. The fourth man scrambled for cover behind the desk, firing wildly.

A bullet grazed Vincent's side, tearing through his suit jacket and stinging his ribs, but the adrenaline masked the pain.

Vincent moved with terrifying precision. He flanked the desk, kicked the heavy mahogany wood hard enough to pin the man's leg, and fired point-blank.

The study fell silent.

Vincent reloaded his weapon. He checked the bodies. They were dead.

But the war wasn't over. Marco Vane was still out there, claiming to be the new boss.

Vincent walked back to the east wing. He knocked softly on the bathroom door.

"It's me. It's Vincent."

The lock clicked, and Nora opened the door.

Vincent looked at her, then at his mother. The reality of his life had violently invaded their sanctuary. He couldn't protect them here anymore.

"We have to leave," Vincent said. "Now."

He gathered them quickly. They slipped out the back entrance, avoiding the front gates where more of Marco's men might be waiting. Vincent led them through the woods behind the estate, navigating the dark, rainy night until they reached a secondary, unmarked garage where he kept a clean, untraceable vehicle.

He drove them to a safe house in upstate New York, a heavily fortified cabin deep in the Adirondacks that only he knew about.

When they finally arrived, the sun was beginning to rise.

Camila was exhausted and fell asleep immediately in the spare bedroom.

Vincent and Nora sat in the small living room. The silence was heavy.

Vincent stared at the unlit fireplace. He had lost his underboss, his home, and his syndicate in a single night. But he had saved Nora and his mother.

"What happens now?" Nora asked quietly, wrapping a blanket around her shoulders.

Vincent looked at her. He had a choice. He could rally loyalists, launch a bloody, protracted war against Marco Vane, and fight to reclaim his throne. It would mean months of violence, constant danger, and looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life.

Or he could disappear.

He looked at the woman who had knelt on broken glass for a stranger. The woman who had shielded his mother with her own body.

"I promised you health insurance," Vincent said, a faint, exhausted smile touching his lips. "I didn't promise you a war zone."

Nora looked at him, understanding dawning in her eyes. "You're walking away?"

"Marco wants the syndicate. He can have it," Vincent said, the decision solidifying in his mind. "The money I have hidden offshore is more than enough for us to disappear. We can go to Europe. South America. Anywhere."

"What about your pride?" Nora asked softly. "You're the boss, Vincent. Can you really just let him win?"

Vincent reached out and took her hand, his fingers intertwining with hers.

"Real power isn't a crown, Nora," Vincent whispered, echoing a truth he had finally realized. "Real power is having something you're willing to lose everything else to protect."

He pulled her close, kissing her deeply, the violence and the shadows of New York fading into the distance.

The devil of New York was dead. But Vincent Russo was finally alive.
