Chapter 11 - The Family Pressure Cooker

|
Over the next forty-eight hours, news of Vanessa's arrest spread through our extended family like a wildfire.
Because I had blocked my parents and sister, my aunts, uncles, and cousins began trying to reach me. Messages poured into my email inbox and social media accounts.
“Rachel, how could you put your own sister in jail?”
“Family handles things privately! You're ruining Aunt Linda's health!”
“Think of little Lily! She needs her mother!”
“Forgive and forget, Rachel. We all make mistakes when we're stressed.”
I sat at the small desk in Emma's hospital room, reading every single message.
Not a single one of my relatives asked how Emma was doing. Not one person asked if my four-year-old daughter was in pain, or if her face would be permanently scarred.
They only cared about the family name. They only cared about protecting the abuser.
I drafted a single, collective email, attached a high-resolution photograph of Emma’s bandaged, blistered face, and sent it to every single relative who had messaged me.
Beneath the photo, I wrote one sentence:
If you believe this is a 'mistake' that deserves forgiveness, never contact me or my daughter again.
Within ten minutes, the messages stopped completely.

The toxic veil had finally been ripped away. I realized that my entire family was built on a foundation of conditional love. I was only loved as long as I kept quiet and accepted their abuse.
The moment I stood up to protect my child, I became the villain. And I was completely fine with that.
