Chapter 10 - The Knock at the Front Door

|
While I sat in the hospital, three miles away, two marked police cruisers pulled into my parents' quiet suburban driveway.
(As I would later learn from court transcripts and police bodycam footage), the arrest was anything but peaceful.
Detective Morales's partner knocked heavily on the front door. My mother opened it, wearing a neat floral cardigan, her face pale with nervous fury.
"Can I help you officer?" my mother asked coldly.
"Mrs. Miller, we have an arrest warrant for Vanessa Vance," the officer stated, holding up the legal document.
Vanessa stepped into the foyer from the living room, holding Lily’s hand. When she saw the handcuffs on the officer's belt, her arrogant facade completely shattered.
"You can't arrest me!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away toward the stairs. "This is a private family matter! It was an accident! She tripped!"
"Ma'am, we have witness statements and forensic evidence," the officer said, stepping inside the house. "Hands behind your back."
My mother threw herself in front of the officers, screaming at the top of her lungs. "Leave her alone! You're scaring my granddaughter! Get out of my house!"
"Ma'am, step aside or you will be arrested for obstruction of justice!"
My father stood in the corner of the hallway, his head bowed, his hands trembling in his pockets as he watched his eldest daughter being turned around and handcuffed.
"Dad! Do something!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing against the officer's grip as steel cuffs snapped around her wrists. "Dad! Don't let them take me!"

My father didn't move. He didn't say a word. He just stood there, freezing, exactly as he had done when the hot pan flew across the kitchen.
Vanessa was led out to the squad car in tears, screaming curses at the top of her voice while the neighbors watched from their front lawns.
