Chapter 5 - Blood and Promises

The black SUV glided smoothly through the rain-slicked streets of the city, taking me away from the nightmare of the Vance estate.
Inside the spacious leather cabin, Leo carefully draped a warm cashmere blanket over my shoulders while Noah adjusted the climate control. Caleb was operating his laptop in the corner, his fingers flying across the keys as real-time updates poured in.
“The private medical suite at Sterling Memorial is ready,” Caleb reported without looking up. “Dr. Aris is waiting. No press, no public records.”
“Good,” Noah said, his gaze fixed on the window.
I looked down at my hands, still seeing the faint red marks around my wrists where the rough ropes had bound me.
“I’m sorry I didn't tell you earlier,” I whispered, looking at my brothers. “I wanted to believe I could fix my marriage on my own. I didn't want to drag you back into the dark.”
Julian turned from the front seat, his expression softening completely.
“Flora, you didn't drag us into anything,” Julian said gently. “When our parents died, we made a promise that no one in this world would ever hurt you. You tried to build a normal life, and we respected that. But if anyone mistakes our restraint for weakness, we remind them who we are.”
Marcus set aside his tablet and reached out, gently squeezing my hand. “The Vances thought you were an isolated bird they could cage and pluck. They had no idea you were backed by an iron mountain.”
Ten minutes later, the SUV pulled into the underground private garage of Sterling Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Aris, a trusted family physician, personally treated the lashes on my back. The physical pain was sharp, but as the soothing salve was applied, a profound sense of clarity washed over me.
The timid, forgiving Flora was dead. She had died under that wooden beam.
When I stepped out of the treatment room in clean, dark silk clothes, all five of my brothers were standing in the hallway like sentinels.
“What’s the status of the Vance family?” I asked Noah.
Noah handed me a warm cup of tea. “Arthur is currently surrounded by his board of directors, who are holding an emergency meeting to strip him of his chairmanship. Wendy is trying to get a flight out of the country, but Caleb put her on the federal no-fly list twenty minutes ago.”

“And Isaac?” I asked, my voice cold.
“Isaac is currently sitting in his broken mansion,” Caleb chimed in with a sharp grin. “Realizing that his credit cards no longer work.”
