Chapter 15 - The Shell Game

Morning broke with a heavy, oppressive fog that rolled off the lake and swallowed the mansion grounds. Marcus had managed to manually override the steel shutters, but the digital lock on the main gates remained jammed. We were trapped on our own estate, functioning as sitting ducks while the clock ticked down on Charles's life.
Mara arrived just after breakfast, escorted through the woods by a tactical team Grant had deployed. She looked exhausted, carrying a thick leather briefcase stuffed with financial documents from the Foundation.
"If the new Chairman wants to force us to rebuild the empire, he needs capital," Mara explained, spreading the documents across the large mahogany dining table. "And to move that kind of capital without triggering federal alarms, he needs legitimate fronts."
"We dissolved the old fronts," I pointed out, leaning over the paperwork. "Richard gave up every shell company the old Chairman used."
"Not all of them," Mara corrected, her finger tracing a highlighted line on a massive spreadsheet. "I spent the entire night auditing the new donations to the Children's Foundation. Two days ago, we received an anonymous contribution of five million dollars."
Marcus frowned. "That's a good thing, isn't it? It's a charity."
"Not when the money comes from a holding company registered in the Cayman Islands under the name 'Aegis Equities'," Mara said grimly. "I dug into Aegis. It was incorporated exactly one week after Richard was arrested. The listed board of directors are all phantom identities. But the routing numbers? They share the exact same digital fingerprint as Collins Legacy Holdings."
I stared at the spreadsheet, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. "He's using the Children's Foundation. He's donating dirty money to our charity to launder it, and then he'll use the leverage of that illegal money to blackmail the board into giving him control of the legitimate assets."
"It's a brilliant trap," Marcus muttered, typing rapidly on his laptop. "If we report the dirty money, the Foundation gets shut down and investigated. If we keep it, we're complicit in money laundering."
"Then we trace the money backward," I said, a dangerous resolve hardening in my chest. "We don't wait for him to contact us again. Marcus, can you hack the Cayman registry? Find out who physically signed the incorporation papers for Aegis."
Marcus cracked his knuckles, a grim smile playing on his lips. "It's highly illegal, completely unethical, and will likely trigger an international cyber-security alert."

"Do it," I ordered.
"Give me ten minutes," Marcus said, diving into the dark web. The prey was finally deciding to become the hunter.
