Chương 9 - The Betrayal at Dawn

"Careful, Tariq," Khalid said, his voice flat and dead as winter ice. "You're speaking to someone whose family ruled this coast while our ancestors were still herding goats in the dunes."

A ripple of nervous murmurs passed through the masked crowd. High-society security guards shifted their positions along the perimeter of the ballroom, their hands hovering near concealed sidearms.

Tariq chuckled, an ugly, grating sound. "Is that what he told you, little waitress? Did my noble brother convince you that he's your savior?"

He took another step closer, swirling the vintage Krug in his glass.

"Tell me, Hannah," Tariq sneered. "Did Khalid tell you who hired the delivery truck that hit old Elias on 44th Street?"

My blood turned to liquid nitrogen. "You did."

"I wanted the old man alive!" Tariq hissed, his eyes flashing with sudden, manic rage. "Elias was useless to me dead! It was Khalid’s logistics team that intercepted him! It was Khalid’s asset who panicked when the old bastard fought back!"

I froze.

The ballroom seemed to recede into a sickening, echoing distance. I turned my head, looking at Khalid.

Behind his silver mask, Khalid’s face was pale as marble. He did not look at Tariq. He looked at me, his eyes filled with an agonizing, silent torment.

"Khalid?" my voice was barely a whisper. "Is that true?"

"Hannah... listen to me," Khalid pleaded, reaching for my arm.

I jerked back as if his touch were poison. "Did your men kill him?"

Before he could answer, the lights aboard the *Nefertiti* died completely.

A deafening explosion ripped through the stern of the yacht, tossing tables, ice sculptures, and screaming guests across the ballroom floor. Emergency sirens began to howl as the massive vessel listed five degrees to the port side.

"Lev! Now!" Khalid roared, pulling his weapon from his tuxedo coat.

The ballroom erupted into absolute pandemonium. Tariq’s private guards opened fire through the smoke, muzzle flashes illuminating the chaos like lightning.

"Secure the resonator!" Tariq screamed from the dais, scrambling toward the black granite pedestal.

I didn't think. All the hurt, the betrayal, and the grief coalesced into a single, blinding instinct: *They will not take what belongs to my grandfather.*

I kicked off my velvet slippers, bunched the emerald silk skirt in my left hand, and sprinted through the screaming crowd toward the dais. A security guard lunged for me; I ducked beneath his arm, driving the pointed heel of the brass bone folder I had kept hidden in my garter straight into his forearm. He howled, dropping his weapon.

I reached the granite pedestal just as Tariq smashed the glass case with the butt of his pistol.

He grabbed the bronze resonator, turning to flee toward the private helipad on the upper deck.

"Stop!" I screamed in the ancient tongue.

The command was so sudden, so resonant, that the acoustic design of the yacht’s vaulted ceiling amplified the sound like a thunderclap. Every window along the port side shivered.

Tariq stumbled, his hands flying to his ears as the frequency pierced his equilibrium.

I launched myself at him, tackling him across the polished mahogany deck. The heavy bronze resonator tumbled from his grip, rolling across the floor toward the railing.

Tariq recovered instantly, his fingers wrapping around my throat, pinning me against the shattered base of the pedestal.

"You should have stayed in Queens, you little bitch," he spat, his thumb pressing into my windpipe.

A single gunshot shattered the air.

Tariq’s eyes widened in shock. A red blossom bloomed on the shoulder of his tailored jacket. He fell backward, gasping for air, clutching his shattered collarbone.

Khalid stood above him, smoke curling from the barrel of his pistol, his silver mask gone, his face bruised and bleeding.

"Don't you ever touch her," Khalid said, his voice shaking with a rage that bordered on madness.

He didn't fire a second time. He grabbed the bronze resonator with one hand, hooked his other arm around my waist, and hoisted me to my feet.

"The yacht is sinking!" Lev yelled through the smoke, appearing at our flank with an automatic shotgun. "Tariq’s men scuttled the engine room to keep the coast guard from boarding! The tender is waiting at the swim platform!"

We ran through the listing corridors, the black seawater already swirling around our ankles as we reached the lower deck. We jumped into the waiting speedboat just as the *Nefertiti* rolled heavily onto its side, fire and steam hissing into the dark night sky.

The twin outboards roared to life, launching us across the black waters of the Gulf toward the jagged, red cliffs of the Jordanian coastline.
