Chapter 18 - The Manhattan Syndicate

Falling didn't feel like death.
It felt like being caught in the throat of an ancient, pneumatic machine.
The vertical shaft was lined with spiral grooves that channeled the rushing air into a tight, upward-swirling vortex. The updraft caught our clothes, slowing our descent like a massive air cushion, spinning us around until my boots struck a steep, polished chute of smooth green jade.
We slid down the chute at terrifying speed, banking around corners in pitch-black darkness, water mist spraying against our faces, until we were ejected violently onto a soft bank of damp, cool river sand.
Khalid rolled onto the bank, groaning in agony as his injured shoulder hit the sand. I tumbled beside him, gasping for breath, coughing up water and grit.
Above us, miles away, a muffled, hollow *BOOM* echoed down the shaft, followed by a low tremor that gently shook the sand beneath our bellies.
The vault was gone.
The million tons of rock had fallen. Eleanor Vance, her mercenaries, and the emerald-lit city of ancient books were sealed beneath a mountain of collapsed desert sandstone.
"Khalid," I wheezed, crawling over to him in the dim, blue light filtering from an underground river flowing beside us. "Khalid, look at me."
He rolled onto his back, his face bruised, his shirt shredded, but his chest was rising and falling with ragged, stubborn breaths. He opened his eyes, looking up at the cavernous ceiling above our new underground sanctuary.
"I'm alive," he muttered, sounding almost surprised. "I'm broke, homeless, wanted by international police, and my family just tried to vaporize me... but I'm alive."
"You're not broke," I said, sitting back on my heels and looking around.
We weren't in a crude cavern.
We were sitting in a modern, reinforced concrete staging hangar built directly into a subterranean river system. Resting on a steel dock fifty feet from us was a high-speed, black-hulled river craft, equipped with twin silent-running electric outboards and modern navigational equipment.
And on the dock, sitting casually on a steel shipping crate, was an aluminum briefcase with a familiar logo stenciled on the lid.
The logo of Vance Global.
"What is this place?" I asked, my voice echoing in the vast, subterranean hangar.
Khalid slowly sat up, his eyes widening as he recognized the staging area. "This... this is my grandfather's private evacuation bunker. Built during the Cold War. It connects to the Gulf of Aqaba through an underground tributary."
"He knew," I breathed. "Your grandfather and my grandfather... they worked together from the very beginning. They built an escape route."
Khalid struggled to his feet, leaning on my arm as we walked toward the dock. He approached the aluminum briefcase and flipped the latches.
Inside rested two clean, diplomatic passports—one with his face, one with mine—issued under false identities by the Republic of Cyprus. Beneath the passports lay three satellite drive keys, a stack of bearer bonds, and a handwritten note on vintage Vance Global letterhead.
The note was dated November 14, 1982.
*To our grandchildren:*
*If you are reading this, the Council has moved to take the Fifth Seal. We have hidden the true cipher not in the books, but in the blood. You carry the frequency, Hannah. Khalid carries the infrastructure. Do not return to New York. The syndicate has already bought the skyline.*
*Go to the coordinates on the black drive. The third keeper is waiting.*
May you like
Khalid picked up the drive, his hands trembling slightly. "The Manhattan Syndicate... they didn't just freeze my assets, Hannah. They've been waiting forty years for us to clear the path."
