Chapter 9 - The Garden Confrontation

|

The morning of the rehearsal dinner arrived with suffocating tension. The estate hummed like a hive preparing for war. Florists, caterers, and musicians flooded the grounds, setting up a massive white tent on the south lawn for the evening's festivities.

Erin was assigned to polish the silver serving trays in the outdoor kitchen pavilion, far away from the main house and Caroline’s immediate wrath. She welcomed the freezing breeze off the harbor; it kept her awake.

Her phone buzzed in her apron pocket. It was a text from the hospital billing department.

Final notice. Payment of $14,000 required by 5:00 PM tomorrow to secure trial placement for Mary Hale.

Erin closed her eyes, fighting a wave of nausea. She had exhausted every option. The banks had laughed at her application. She was going to lose her mother because she was poor. It was a brutal, simple, agonizing mathematics.

“Crying over the inevitable?”

The sharp, aristocratic voice sliced through the crisp air.

Erin spun around. Caroline stood in the entrance of the pavilion, wearing a stunning, tailored white coat. She was alone, the fake smile entirely gone, replaced by a cold, victorious sneer.

“I know what you're doing,” Caroline hissed, stepping closer, her heels clicking aggressively on the stone floor. “You think because Nathaniel played the hero yesterday that you have some sort of hold over him. You think you’re special.”

“I am doing my job, Ms. Sloan,” Erin said, refusing to back down, gripping her polishing cloth.

“Your job was to disappear when I framed you,” Caroline snarled, dropping the pretense completely. “But you didn't. You survived. Which means I have to try harder.”

Caroline reached into her expensive handbag and pulled out a folded piece of paper. She tossed it onto the silver tray Erin was polishing.

Erin looked down. It was a printout of a hospital record. St. Catherine’s. Mary Hale.

“How did you get this?” Erin gasped, her blood running completely cold.

“My uncle sits on the executive board of St. Catherine’s,” Caroline smiled maliciously. “He has access to everything. Including the very long, very sad list of patients waiting for the experimental immunotherapy trial.”

Caroline leaned in, her voice dropping to a vicious whisper.

“I know you need fourteen thousand dollars by tomorrow, Erin. And I know you don't have it. But even if you miraculously find the money, my uncle can ensure your mother’s name falls to the bottom of the list. He can make sure the trial is ‘full’ before she ever gets a dose.”

Erin stopped breathing. The sheer, unadulterated evil radiating from the woman in front of her was paralyzing.

“What do you want?” Erin choked out, tears of absolute terror filling her eyes.

“I want you to quit,” Caroline whispered, her eyes flashing with triumph. “I want you to pack your bags, walk out of this estate right now, and never speak to Nathaniel again. You leave quietly, and I will make a phone call to my uncle. Your mother gets her treatment. You stay, and she dies. The choice is yours.”
