Chapter 12 - A Midnight Confession

|

The gasp that rippled through the tent was audible.

Caroline stood abandoned on the dance floor, her face flushed a mottled, ugly red. She looked like she was going to scream, or shatter, or perhaps murder someone right there in front of three hundred witnesses.

“Nathaniel!” Caroline hissed, her voice cutting through the silent room like a knife. “What are you doing?!”

Nathaniel ignored her completely. He pulled Erin gently but firmly onto the edge of the dance floor. He placed one hand on her waist, holding her other hand in his, and began to move her to the rhythm of the music.

Erin was stiff with absolute terror. “Mr. Whitmore, please, everyone is looking. You are humiliating her.”

“I am showing her exactly what she is,” Nathaniel murmured, his head bowed close to hers so only she could hear. “Invisible.”

He swept her across the floor, his movements flawless and commanding. Erin felt the heat of his hand through her thin uniform shirt. For a surreal, dizzying moment, she wasn't a maid fighting for her mother’s life. She was the only woman in the room.

When the song ended, Nathaniel didn't release her immediately. He stepped back, offering a polite, formal bow, before turning and walking out of the tent without saying a word to anyone, leaving his rehearsal dinner in absolute chaos.

Hours later, long after the guests had fled the awkward tension and Caroline had locked herself in the guest suite screaming at her mother, the estate was finally quiet.

Erin was in the massive, industrial kitchen, scrubbing pots with a fierce, anxious energy. She couldn't sleep. The fourteen thousand dollars still hung over her head, due by 5:00 PM tomorrow.

The heavy kitchen doors pushed open.

Nathaniel walked in. He had shed his tuxedo jacket and unbuttoned his collar, looking exhausted but incredibly grounded. He walked over to the stainless-steel island and hoisted himself up, sitting on the counter like a normal man, not a billionaire CEO.

“You shouldn't be working,” Nathaniel said quietly, watching her scrub.

“If I stop moving, I think I’ll panic,” Erin admitted, setting the sponge down, wiping her soapy hands on her apron. She looked up at him. “Why did you do that tonight? Caroline will destroy me tomorrow.”

“Caroline will not be here tomorrow,” Nathaniel stated, his voice flat and absolute.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a crisp, white envelope, tossing it onto the counter next to the sink.

“Open it,” he said.

Erin hesitated, her hands shaking as she picked it up. She broke the seal and pulled out a printed document. It was a receipt from St. Catherine’s Hospital.

The balance for Mary Hale’s experimental immunotherapy had been paid in full. But it wasn't just fourteen thousand dollars. The receipt showed a payment of two hundred thousand dollars, covering the entire trial, the private room, and round-the-clock specialized care.

Erin’s knees buckled. She grabbed the edge of the sink, a ragged sob tearing from her throat.

“You… you paid it,” she wept, staring at the paper as if it were a miracle.

“I paid it hours ago,” Nathaniel said softly, slipping off the counter and stepping toward her. “Your mother’s treatment begins tomorrow morning. Caroline has no power over you. Her uncle was removed from the hospital board tonight.”

Erin couldn't stop crying. She looked up at the man who had just saved her entire world, the gratitude so overwhelming it felt like physical pain.

“Why?” she choked out. “Why are you doing this for me?”

May you like

Nathaniel reached out, his long fingers gently catching a tear as it fell down her cheek.

“Because you are the only real thing in this entire, counterfeit house, Erin,” he whispered, his voice dark and heavy with truth. “And I am tired of pretending.”
