Chapter 20 - The Voice in the Dark

|

The smoke from the breached doors filled the room, illuminated only by the faint ambient light from the city below.

Dante fired blindly into the doorway, the muzzle flashes illuminating the luxurious penthouse in terrifying, strobe-like bursts. Matteo emerged from the hallway, leaning on his cane but holding an assault rifle, providing heavy suppressing fire.

"Elina, the panic room!" Dante yelled over the deafening roar of the guns.

Elina grabbed a terrified Mia from her bed, wrapping her in a blanket, and sprinted toward the hidden reinforced door behind the bookshelf.

But as she reached the door, the gunfire abruptly stopped.

A chilling, mechanized voice echoed through the penthouse's compromised internal PA system.

"Cease fire, Mr. Moretti. Or the woman dies."

Dante froze, his gun still raised. The smoke cleared slightly, revealing a squad of heavily armed mercenaries standing in the doorway. They weren't moving forward. They were holding their positions.

A single figure stepped through the ruined doors, wearing a sleek, tailored suit, holding a small, glowing tablet. The man’s face was hidden in the shadows, but his posture radiated absolute, terrifying authority.

"Who are you?" Dante demanded, his voice a lethal growl.

"I am the man who funded your uncle," the figure replied smoothly, tapping the tablet. "And I am the man who holds the override codes to the explosive charges currently rigged to the structural supports of this building."

Matteo tightened his grip on his rifle. "You're bluffing."

"Check your security feeds," the man offered.

Dante glanced at a nearby battery-powered emergency monitor. It showed C4 charges wired to the main support columns in the subterranean parking garage. The timer was counting down from five minutes.

"What do you want?" Dante asked, his heart hammering against his ribs as he looked back at Elina and Mia cowering by the panic room.

"I want the ports, Dante. And I want your absolute surrender to the Global Syndicate," the man stated calmly. "Sign over your empire, and you and your family can walk out of this building alive. Refuse, and you all fall with the Tower."

The man stepped forward into the ambient light, revealing a face Dante didn't recognize, but bearing a tattoo on his wrist that made Dante’s blood run cold—a black crown pierced by a dagger.

Dante looked at Matteo, then at Elina. The woman he loved was staring back at him, terrified but fiercely trusting him to save them. He was a king backed into a corner, forced to choose between his crown and his family.

Dante slowly lowered his weapon, dropping it onto the glass coffee table with a heavy thud.

"I accept your terms," Dante whispered, surrendering his empire to save his daughter.

But as the man stepped forward with the contract, a faint, red laser dot appeared perfectly in the center of the stranger’s forehead, originating from a building three miles away.

Dante smiled a slow, dark, terrifying smile. The mafia king never played without a backup plan.

"But I think my sniper disagrees."
