Chapter 7 - Gathering the Ghosts

|

Matteo walked back into the house, locking the deadbolt behind him. Lena was waiting in the hallway, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. She had seen the black SUV speed away like the devil himself was chasing it.

“You can't just threaten them and expect them to walk away, Matteo,” Lena said, her voice tight with anxiety. “Victor is trying to prove he owns the city now. Backing down makes him look weak. He’ll retaliate.”

“I know,” Matteo said, pulling a burner phone from his jacket pocket. He hadn't turned the device on in three years. “That’s why I'm not waiting for him to make the first move.”

He powered on the phone and dialed a number he knew by heart. It rang twice before a deep, gravelly voice answered.

“The bakery is closed on weekends,” the voice said. It was an old code.

“I need a dozen cannolis, Dante,” Matteo replied quietly. “And I need them delivered to the old warehouse on 4th Street. Today.”

There was a long, heavy silence on the other end of the line.

“Boss?” Dante’s voice cracked slightly, losing its gruff edge. “They told me you were in the ground. They told me you bled out in the river.”

“I took a long vacation, my friend. But the waterfront is getting noisy again. Someone named Victor is making a mess in my living room.”

“Victor,” Dante spat the name like poison. “He’s a punk, Matteo. A kid with too much money and a lot of imported muscle. He’s been taxing the local businesses, hurting the people you used to protect. He thinks the throne is empty.”

“Meet me at the warehouse in one hour,” Matteo commanded. “Come alone. And Dante? Bring the heavy tools.”

Matteo hung up and turned to Lena. She was staring at him, realizing that the gentle husband who cooked her dinner and rubbed her feet after a long shift was officially gone. The Don of the Rossi family had returned.

“I need you to pack a bag,” Matteo told her gently, placing his hands on her shoulders. “I have a safe house outside the city. It’s off the grid. You’ll be safe there until I finish this.”

Lena shook her head, her eyes flashing with a stubborn fire. “No.”

“Lena, please—”

“I said no, Matteo. I married the man, not the myth. When you bleed, I bleed. I am not running away while you go to war for my honor.”
