Chapter 16 - The Lockdown

The cold steel against her forehead made Genevieve stop breathing. For sixteen months, she had played the perfect, loving partner. She had slept in his bed, smiled at his friends, and meticulously plotted his absolute destruction.
Now, she was entirely at his mercy.
“Do it,” Genevieve hissed, refusing to beg. She lifted her chin, glaring at him with pure hatred. “Pull the trigger, Alessandro. You’re a monster, just like your father. You can wear the expensive suits and put your name on hospitals, but underneath it all, you’re just a street thug holding a gun.”
Alessandro stared into her eyes. He saw no remorse, no fear—only the bitter anger of a predator caught in a trap.
Slowly, deliberately, Alessandro lowered the gun.
He didn't shoot her. He holstered the weapon under his tuxedo jacket.
Genevieve frowned, confused and suspicious. “What are you doing?”
“Killing you would be a mercy,” Alessandro said quietly. He walked over to his desk, picked up the ruined laptop, and smashed it violently against the edge of the mahogany wood, ensuring the hard drive was completely destroyed.
“I don't understand,” she whispered.
“You stole a dead girl’s name, Genevieve. You gave up your entire life to become a ghost for the Falcone family,” Alessandro explained, turning back to face her. “And tonight, you failed them. You didn't just fail them; you are the reason their entire empire is bankrupt.”
Genevieve’s face went chalk-white as the realization dawned on her.
“When the Falcone bosses find out what happened tonight, they aren't going to come looking for me,” Alessandro smiled, a dark, terrifying expression. “They are going to come looking for the asset who plugged a virus into their main servers and lost their entire fortune.”
He walked toward the door of the study.
“You are letting me go?” she asked, genuine disbelief in her voice.
“I am letting you run,” Alessandro corrected. “You have nothing. No money, no identity, no protection. The men who trained you are going to hunt you to the ends of the earth, and they are not going to be as kind as I am.”
He unlocked the heavy mahogany doors and pulled them open.
“Get out of my house, Genevieve.”

She stared at him, realizing the absolute, horrific brilliance of his revenge. He wasn't giving her mercy; he was giving her a death sentence carried out by her own people.
Genevieve hiked up her ruined, blood-stained wedding dress and sprinted out of the study, disappearing into the dark corridors of the mansion, running for a life that was already over.
