Chapter 6 - THE TRUTH ON LIVE TELEVISION

At 3:00 PM, I sat in the grand library of Luca’s Lake Forest estate.

The room was vast, lined with thousands of leather-bound books, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a private forest, and a roaring marble fireplace. Leo and Maya were playing happily on the Persian rug with a brand-new set of wooden blocks that Luca’s staff had quietly delivered an hour earlier.

On the large flat-screen television mounted above the mantle, the live feed from Moretti Global Headquarters in downtown Chicago broadcasted across three major cable news networks.

The press room was packed wall-to-wall with over a hundred journalists.

Luca walked out onto the stage. He wore a crisp dark suit, no tie, his hair neatly combed back. He stood behind the podium, looking directly into the camera lenses with a cold, terrifying calm.

"Good afternoon," Luca began, his deep voice carrying through the speakers into the quiet library. "I am here today to address the disgusting, fabricated stories published this morning regarding my family."

The press pool erupted in a flurry of camera shutters.

Luca held up his hand, and the room instantly fell dead silent.

"Five years ago," Luca said, his voice dropping into a soft, gravelly tone that sounded profoundly human, "I made the single greatest mistake of my life. I allowed pride, ambition, and toxic influences to destroy my marriage to Nia Carter—the most incredible woman I have ever known."

I froze in front of the TV, my heart skipping a beat.

"When Nia left me," Luca continued, looking directly into the camera, "she did not know she was pregnant. When she discovered it weeks later, she tried to contact me. But certain individuals in my inner circle—specifically my former communications director, Evelyn Shaw—intercepted those calls, threatened her with legal action, and ensured I never received her messages."

Gasps echoed through the media room on screen.

"For five years, Nia Carter raised our twin children alone," Luca said, his voice trembling slightly with raw emotion. "She worked, she sacrificed, and she gave them a beautiful, loving life without taking a single dollar from me. She did not hide my children to extort me. She hid them to protect them from the hollow, ruthless world I inhabited."

Luca leaned over the podium, his eyes narrowing into cold steel.

"My children, Leo and Maya, are the greatest blessings of my life. From this day forward, any news organization, tabloid, or individual who attempts to harass them, publish their faces, or spread lies about their mother will face the full, unlimited legal and financial force of Moretti Global. We have already filed twelve lawsuits this afternoon. We will file twelve more by sunset."

He took a slow breath, stepping out from behind the podium.

"Nia Carter owes me nothing," Luca concluded softly. "I owe her everything. Good day."

He turned and walked off the stage, leaving the entire press corps in stunned, breathless silence.

In the library, I sat frozen on the leather sofa, tears streaming down my face.

He hadn't protected his brand. He hadn't protected his stock price. He had stood in front of the entire world, exposed his own failures, destroyed his ex-wife's lies, and publicly elevated me as the hero of his story.

"Mommy," Maya said, walking over and placing her tiny hand on my knee. "Why are you crying? Is that man on TV being mean again?"

I wiped my tears, pulling my little girl into my lap and holding her close.

"No, sweetie," I whispered, looking at the screen where Luca’s face had just been. "He was being brave."
