Chapter 4
Chapter 5: The Tape
The Ask Again foundation grew faster than any of them anticipated. Naomi’s curriculum was brilliant, focusing not on obvious bruises, but on the silent, cinematic details of a frightened child’s life: the flinching, the way they positioned themselves near exits, the strategic isolation.
To build their training modules, Ryan and Naomi secured permission to use redacted, anonymized security camera footage from various schools—including, with Ethan’s brave permission, old footage from his own elementary school.
One evening, Ryan sat in the foundation's office, reviewing a specific clip to use in a seminar. It was a silent, black-and-white recording from the school's front entrance, dated two years prior.
On the screen, Claire arrived to pick Ethan up.
Ryan watched the footage, feeling a cold knot twist in his stomach. Without audio, the manipulation was stark, framed like a deliberate, horrifying dance. Claire didn't strike him. She simply leaned down and whispered something. On the monitor, Ryan watched the micro-expressions on his son’s face—the immediate dropping of his gaze, the defensive rounding of his shoulders, the way his hands curled into tight fists by his sides. Claire smiled at a passing teacher, a perfect mask of maternal warmth, while her hand rested heavily on the back of Ethan's neck, steering him like property.
"It’s hard to watch the past," Naomi said softly, stepping into the office and looking at the frozen frame.

"It was right in front of the camera," Ryan whispered. "Right in front of everyone. The tension was screaming, and we all just walked past it."
"That is exactly why this program exists," Naomi reminded him, placing a hand on his shoulder. "To teach them how to look at the tape and see the truth."
