CHAPTER 6
Chapter 6: The Fractured Aftermath
The entire auditorium seemed to hold that single sentence.
Edward looked down at his hand. Slowly, without any dramatic flair or theatrical anger, he slid his wedding ring off his finger. He didn't do it to punish the room; he did it because the sheer weight of the lie had made the gold too heavy to wear.
Victoria noticed the gesture. Every ounce of color left her face. “Edward, please. Don’t humiliate me here. Not in front of these people.”
“You humiliated yourself,” Edward said softly, looking at the stage flowers, the parents pretending not to watch, and the microphone that had almost announced a stolen legacy. “You humiliated yourself the exact moment you tried to throw her real father out of the room.”
Sophie began to cry again, but her shoulders relaxed. It wasn't the crying of a frightened child anymore. It was the sound of absolute relief.
The ceremony didn't continue right away. Recognizing the crisis, Mrs. Lawson gently guided the children down the side hallway toward a classroom stocked with teachers and cupcakes. The remaining parents stayed behind in the auditorium, some suddenly engrossed in their phones, most too stunned to look away from the unfolding drama.
Edward walked out into the carpeted hallway, already dialing his family attorney.
Left behind, Daniel sat down on a wooden bench near the school's trophy case, his heavy delivery bag resting at his feet. Sophie immediately climbed up beside him, leaning her head against his shoulder as if no time had passed at all.

Victoria stood completely alone by the front row of empty velvet seats. For the first time in her life, no one rushed to comfort her, no one offered an excuse, and no one validated her anger.
It was the first real consequence she had ever been forced to feel.
