Chapter 8: The Morning Light

The sun rose gently over the city, casting a warm, golden glow into the bedroom of Caroline and Leo's new home. It wasn't a sprawling, isolating mansion like the one in Malibu, nor was it a cold, stark apartment. It was a sunlit, comfortable house filled with books, thriving plants, and photographs of people who actually mattered.

Caroline woke up slowly, the soft morning light illuminating the side of her face. She reached across the bed, her fingers brushing against the empty space where Leo usually slept.

She smiled, hearing the faint clatter of dishes from the kitchen downstairs.

Slipping into a soft robe, Caroline walked to the window. She looked out at the quiet neighborhood street. The air was crisp and clean. There were no news vans parked on the corner. There were no aggressive paparazzi hiding in the bushes. The relentless, suffocating pressure of being a public tragedy had finally faded into a peaceful anonymity.

She walked downstairs, the hardwood floors cool beneath her bare feet.

Leo was at the stove, humming softly to himself as he flipped pancakes. He wore a simple t-shirt and sweatpants, looking entirely relaxed.

"Good morning, Mrs. Vance," he said, turning around with a bright smile.

Caroline walked over, wrapping her arms around his waist from behind and resting her cheek against his back. The warmth of his skin grounded her.

"Good morning," she murmured.

"I was thinking," Leo said, turning the stove off and turning to face her. "The foundation is running smoothly. The new recovery wing is fully staffed. We actually have... a free weekend."

Caroline looked up at him, her eyes sparkling with genuine amusement. "A free weekend? I don't think I remember how to do that."

"We're going to learn," Leo said, kissing her forehead. "No emails. No phone calls. Just us."

It was a simple promise, but it felt revolutionary. For the first time in years, Caroline wasn't bracing for the next disaster. She was finally allowing herself to just live.
