Chapter 7 - The Syndicate's Shadow

|

The rest of the day passed in a strange, insulated bubble. Mrs. Chen happily watched Emma in the media room, treating the hostage situation like a luxury vacation, while I sat on the sofa with my ankle elevated.

But the reality of Luca’s world could not be hidden behind expensive glass and marble.

In the late afternoon, three men arrived at the penthouse. They were older, wearing sharp suits and carrying leather briefcases. They moved with the confident, heavy swagger of men who commanded violence. Luca led them into his private study, leaving the heavy oak doors cracked just an inch.

I wasn't trying to eavesdrop, but their voices carried into the quiet living room.

“The Russians are protecting him, Luca,” one of the men growled. “Jake Martinez promised them access to the southern shipping routes if they helped him launder the Castellano bonds. That’s why he’s back in Seattle. He has Volkov’s backing.”

“Volkov is a fool if he thinks he can operate in my city,” Luca’s voice replied, cold and devoid of any warmth.

“If we hit Jake, Volkov will consider it an act of war,” another man argued. “We are talking about a full-scale syndicate bloodbath over three million dollars. Is it worth the cost, Don Castellano?”

“It is not about the money anymore, Vincenzo,” Luca stated, his voice echoing with absolute authority. “Jake Martinez was planning to kidnap an innocent woman and child to use as leverage against me. He brought civilians into our business. He crossed a line that I do not forgive. He dies by the end of the week.”

I gasped softly, my hand flying to my mouth.

I heard the scraping of a chair, and suddenly the oak doors were pulled wide open. Luca stood in the doorway, his dark eyes locking instantly onto my pale face.

He didn't look angry that I had heard. He simply dismissed the three men with a flick of his wrist. They filed out of the penthouse in silence.

Luca walked over to the sofa and crouched down so he was eye-level with me.

“I am not going to lie to you, Ava,” Luca said quietly, taking my trembling hand in his. “The world I live in is dark. It is violent. But you need to understand that the violence will never touch you. I am ending Jake because if I don't, you will spend the rest of your life looking over your shoulder. And I refuse to let you live in fear.”
