Chapter 19 - The Debt Paid

|

“Let me see your hand,” Luca murmured, his voice entirely devoid of the violence he had just unleashed on Vanessa.

Nora hesitated, still trembling from the adrenaline and the agonizing pain. Slowly, she pulled her right hand away from her chest, exposing the grotesque, swelling purple fingers to the harsh security lights.

Luca’s jaw tightened. He didn't flinch, but his dark eyes flared with a protective fury.

“Marco,” Luca called out, not looking away from Nora.

The massive head of security appeared in the doorway.

“Have my private doctor waiting in the study,” Luca ordered. “And Marco... send a car to the address in Nora’s employee file. Pick up her son, Leo, and her mother. Bring them to the guest house on the south lawn. They will be staying with us tonight.”

Nora gasped, her eyes widening in shock. “Mr. Moretti, no, you don't have to—”

“I do,” Luca interrupted gently. “Your car has no registration, and you cannot drive with that hand. Vanessa’s threats are empty now, but I do not take chances with the people who bleed for this family.”

He reached out with his left hand and gently supported her elbow, helping her rise to her feet.

“Tomorrow morning,” Luca continued, walking her slowly out of the vault room, “my accountants will wire the hospital the remaining six hundred dollars for Leo’s bills. We will set up a permanent prescription delivery for his inhalers. And your car will be scrapped and replaced.”

Nora stopped walking in the middle of the hallway. She looked up at the towering, terrifying man.

“Why are you doing this?” she whispered, tears welling in her eyes. “I’m just a maid.”

Luca stopped and looked down at her, a strange, profound respect settling over his hardened features.

“You are not a maid anymore, Nora,” Luca said softly.
