CHAPTER 10: BEYOND THE RUIN

CHAPTER 10: BEYOND THE RUIN
The sirens outside were deafening. Not just police. Federal intercept units. The truth had reached every news desk in the hemisphere within three seconds. Vance stood frozen as the automated locking mechanisms of the boardroom engaged from the outside. He was trapped. By his own security system. Julian was on his knees, holding Eleanor. Clara walked over slowly, dropping to the floor beside the woman who had raised her. The rain outside was finally stopping. The first light of dawn was breaking through the heavy grey clouds over the Hudson. Eleanor looked up at Clara, her breathing shallow. "Did... did we win?" "The world knows," Clara whispered, pressing a hand to Eleanor’s wound. "They know everything." Eleanor managed a weak, broken smile. "I promised your mother... I would protect you." "You did," Clara said. The forgiveness wasn't perfect. The scars of twenty-five years of deception would never fully disappear. But as Eleanor’s eyes closed, her breathing stabilizing as the medics finally breached the door, Clara felt the crushing weight leave her chest. The fire had finally burned itself out.
Six months later. The Harrington empire was gone, dissolved by federal courts. The Sterling asset group was restructured into a public trust for victims of government surveillance. Clara stood on the pier, looking out over the calm water. The morning air was crisp. Clean. Julian walked up beside her, hands in his pockets. He looked lighter now. The shadow of his father’s legacy no longer hung over his shoulders. "Where will you go?" he asked. Clara pulled the old, worn photograph from her pocket. The one showing four friends smiling before the world broke. She let go of it. The wind caught the paper, carrying it out over the river until it dipped beneath the surface and disappeared. "Nowhere," Clara said, turning to look at Julian with a genuine smile. "I’m finally right where I belong."
