Chapter 3: The Confrontation

Don Ricardo could not contain his seething rage for a second longer. He pushed the heavy wooden door violently, sending it crashing against the inner wall with a deafening thud.

"Get your hands off her this instant!" his voice roared, shaking the very dust from the ceiling.

Clara let out a muffled shriek and shoved herself away from Diego, nearly tripping over a bucket of water. The groom's expression underwent a rapid, fascinating transformation. First, sheer shock widened his eyes. Then, a flash of pure, unadulterated annoyance crossed his features. Finally, as if flipping a switch, he plastered on his signature, artificial smile.

"Don Ricardo," Diego said, casually adjusting the lapels of his tuxedo jacket as if he had merely been caught stealing a pastry from the kitchen. "I assure you, this is not what it looks like."

Don Ricardo stepped slowly into the confined room. His face was entirely devoid of color, but his eyes burned with a lethal, paternal fury.

"Do not insult my intelligence," the older man growled.

Clara pressed herself against the far wall, burying her face in her hands as quiet sobs racked her shoulders. "Sir, I... I'm so sorry..."

"Do not say a word yet, Clara," Don Ricardo commanded, his gaze locked intensely on Diego. "First, I want to hear what pathetic, insulting lie this man is about to invent."

Diego held up his hands in a placating gesture. "Ricardo, please. It’s just pre-wedding jitters. A profound misunderstanding."

"A misunderstanding?" Don Ricardo repeated, his voice dangerously low. "You are kissing a maid in a supply closet an hour before you take my daughter’s hand at the altar, and you have the audacity to call it a misunderstanding?"

Diego’s charming facade began to crack, his voice dropping its friendly cadence. "Be very careful about what you do next, Ricardo. The house is full of important people."

"And that is exactly why I am going to drag you by your collar and say this in front of every single one of them."

Diego's jaw tightened, the mask slipping further to reveal the arrogant boy underneath. "You wouldn't dare."

Don Ricardo took a threatening step forward. "Watch me. This wedding is over. Right now."

Clara gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. Diego shot her a vicious, blaming glare, silently cursing her for his own careless mistake.

"Ricardo, listen to reason," the groom hissed, dropping the 'Don' out of blatant disrespect. "Valeria is already a nervous wreck. If you march up there and tell her this right now, it will completely destroy her."

"No," Don Ricardo corrected him fiercely. "You are the one who destroyed her."

"You don't understand anything," Diego spat.

"I understand enough." Don Ricardo turned his back on the younger man, reaching for the brass door handle. "I am going to find my daughter."

But before he could step back into the corridor, a fragile, trembling voice pierced the heavy silence of the room.

"Dad?"
