MOSCOW — Former Russian senator Umar Dzhabrailov, whose name recently resurfaced in connection with newly released files related to Jeffrey Epstein, has been found dead in Moscow, according to Russian state media.

Dzhabrailov, 67, was discovered Monday inside a residential complex in central Moscow with a firearm next to him. Russia’s state news agency TASS reported that unnamed law enforcement sources described the incident as a suicide.

Authorities said he was transported to a hospital but could not be saved.

Why It Matters

Dzhabrailov’s name appeared in recently released U.S. Justice Department documents related to Epstein. The files included email exchanges from 2001 between Dzhabrailov and British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving a prison sentence in the United States for her role in facilitating Epstein’s sexual abuse of underage girls.

Being named in the Epstein files is not evidence of wrongdoing. However, public scrutiny has intensified around individuals whose names appear in the documents, especially those with political or celebrity connections.

The renewed attention brought Dzhabrailov’s past associations back into focus, including his previously acknowledged friendship with music mogul Sean Combs.

The Email Correspondence

According to documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice, Dzhabrailov wrote to Maxwell in May 2001:

“Dear Ghislaine, I’m back from London, planning 2 B in Moscow. Really want 2 C U, but I need 2 know exactly when U arrive, cause I want 2 take care of U and arrange welcoming things. Wishing U all the best! Umar.”

Maxwell replied the following day, apologizing for a delayed trip and indicating she planned to visit Moscow soon, asking whether he would be available to meet.

Dzhabrailov later commented publicly on the exchange, describing the relationship as purely social. According to Russian outlet NEWS.Ru, citing the Telegram channel Baza, he said:

“We were social friends and vacationed together in various parts of Europe. That’s all. A friendly message from an acquaintance I was friends with back then.”

Officials and legal experts emphasize that appearing in the Epstein-related documents does not imply criminal involvement or knowledge of Epstein’s crimes.

Past Controversies

Dzhabrailov was no stranger to public controversy. In 2017, he was arrested after firing a decorative pistol inside the Four Seasons Hotel Moscow, an incident that made national headlines.

He also ran for the Russian presidency in 2000, though he did not emerge as a major contender.

In November 2024, Dzhabrailov addressed media attention regarding his friendship with Sean Combs, also known as Diddy. In a Telegram post, he said the two met at the Cannes Film Festival, where their yachts were docked near one another.

“As it happened, my yacht was docked next to theirs. We became friends and later began attending various events together,” he wrote.

Dzhabrailov denied any involvement in alleged misconduct associated with Combs, stating there were no “oil parties” or other improper activities during their interactions.

He added:

“Despite all the scandals and rumors currently being discussed in the media, I didn’t notice anything bad during the time we interacted. I saw in them not only stars, but true professionals in their field — creative, talented, and high-energy people.”
