Chapter 10: The Star that Guided Them Home

Years flowed by, bringing light and warmth back to the Alcázar estate.

Mateo grew into a bright, energetic, and incredibly kind-hearted young boy. He had his father's dark hair and strong jawline, but his eyes—full of empathy and mischief—were entirely his mother's.

Rafael never hid the truth of his past from him. As Mateo grew old enough to understand, Rafael sat him down and explained the story, carefully filtering the darkness to suit a child's mind. He told Mateo about the beautiful mother who loved him from heaven. He explained that sometimes, people with shadows in their hearts try to do terrible things.

"But," Rafael always emphasized, pointing a finger at his son's chest, "the light is always stronger than the shadow. Because there are brave people in this world who are not afraid to look closely and speak the truth."

Mateo loved visiting the foundation offices. He was adored by the staff, but his favorite person was the formidable Director of Family Support.

He called her "Aunt Luz."

Whenever he ran into her office, Lucía would laugh, her eyes crinkling with affection as she pulled him into a tight hug.

"I am not your aunt, little one," she would always tease him, ruffling his hair.

And Mateo, with absolute childhood certainty, would always reply, "But you found me. So you're my family."

The grand Alcázar mansion was no longer a tomb of whispers and fear. The heavy drapes were always pulled back to let the Andalusian sun flood the marble floors. The staff no longer walked on eggshells; they laughed, they spoke freely, and they were treated with the utmost respect. No order given in that house ever carried the sinister undertone of a threat again.

Just outside the door to Mateo's childhood room, Rafael had commissioned a small, elegant brass plaque to be mounted on the wall. It was a permanent reminder for anyone who walked the halls of the estate.

It read: "Sometimes the truth is born small, but no lie is big enough to hide it forever."

And on the quiet, peaceful nights, after reading his son a bedtime story and turning out the lamp, Rafael would linger by the door. He would watch the gentle rise and fall of Mateo's chest as he slept safely in his bed.

Inevitably, his eyes would drift to the small patch of skin just behind the boy’s left ear.

He would think back to that terrifying night when a young nanny, trembling in her crisp white uniform, dared to defy a monster. He thought of how she had risked everything to point out the one thing no one was supposed to see.

It was just a tiny mark. A minor blemish that a cruel woman had dismissed as insignificant, assuming her wealth and power could overshadow nature.

But it wasn't insignificant.

Everything was contained within that tiny mark.

The crime that tore them apart.
