Chapter 3 - The Lethal Prescription

|

Marta’s words struck me harder than any physical blow I had ever received. She was right. If a maid had accused my flawless, aristocratic fiancée of poisoning my mother, I would have thought it was a desperate extortion attempt. Audrey had played her part too perfectly.

I left Marta in the laundry room with a promise of absolute protection and a stack of cash that would pay her rent for a year.

I took the brown paper bag straight to the underground.

Dr. Elias Thorne was a disgraced former surgeon who now operated a shadow clinic in the Bronx, catering exclusively to the syndicate. He owed me his life, his clinic, and his continued freedom.

I dropped the paper bag onto his stainless steel examination table.

“I need a full chemical breakdown of these capsules,” I commanded. “I have exactly two hours before I have to return to the estate.”

Elias didn't ask questions. He took the pills into his small laboratory, firing up a mass spectrometer. I paced the sterile room, my mind racing through the timeline. Audrey had volunteered to take over my mother’s medication three weeks ago. My mother’s decline had been sharp and terrifyingly sudden.

An hour later, Elias emerged from the lab, his face pale and slick with nervous sweat.

“Victor,” Elias said, his voice shaking slightly as he handed me a printed readout. “Where did you get these?”

“What is in them?” I demanded, ignoring his question.

“It’s a highly concentrated synthetic derivative of digitalis, mixed with a heavy barbiturate,” Elias explained, tapping the paper. “It’s a cocktail designed to mimic massive, natural heart failure. It slows the heart rate down while suppressing the respiratory system. Given your mother’s recent stroke, any medical examiner in the state would sign off on it as a natural, tragic secondary event.”

The cold reality of the betrayal settled deep into my bones. Audrey wasn't just abusing my mother. She was executing a flawless, untraceable murder.

“Is it a common drug?” I asked.

“No,” Elias shook his head firmly. “This isn't street level. This is a custom compound. A designer poison. Whoever supplied this to your fiancée is a high-level medical professional with access to restricted chemical precursors.”

I folded the paper and slipped it into my tailored jacket. Audrey had a supplier. And I was going to find him before the sun went down.
