NEW YORK — A devastating development in the search for **Savannah Guthrie’s missing mother has sent shockwaves through the newsroom of Today.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the veteran anchor appeared visibly shaken after learning that an unidentified woman’s body had been discovered in a canal in Phoenix, Arizona, raising new fears in the already agonizing search for her mother, Nancy Guthrie.

While authorities stress that the cases have not been officially linked, the discovery has reignited national attention and speculation surrounding the disappearance of the 84-year-old matriarch.

Body Found Along Phoenix Canal

Police in Phoenix confirmed that officers responded to a call early Saturday morning reporting an unresponsive woman along the bank of a canal.

According to a statement from Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, officers were dispatched to the Grand Canal Trail near 27th Place at around 7:40 a.m. local time.

“Details on the call indicated that an adult female was on the nearby canal bank and was unresponsive,” authorities said.
“When officers arrived, they located the woman, who was ultimately pronounced deceased on scene.”

Investigators have not yet released the woman’s identity, age, or cause of death, leaving many unanswered questions.

The location of the discovery is particularly notable: Phoenix is roughly 120 miles from Tucson, where Nancy Guthrie vanished last month.

Is It Connected to Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance?

Despite the alarming discovery, authorities say there is no confirmed connection between the Phoenix death investigation and the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie.

The case remains under the jurisdiction of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, which is leading the investigation into the missing woman.

Reporter Michael Ruiz shared an update from authorities on social media, writing:

“PCSD says it has not been advised of any law enforcement activity at the canal in Phoenix this morning being connected to the Nancy Guthrie case.”

Nevertheless, the timing of the discovery has fueled speculation online and among observers closely following the case.

Nancy Guthrie, a beloved grandmother and longtime Arizona resident, was reported missing on February 1 from her home near Tucson.

Evidence Suggests Possible Abduction

Investigators believe Nancy may have been abducted from her home in the middle of the night.

Surveillance footage recovered from her property shows an armed individual tampering with a doorbell camera, according to a post shared earlier in the investigation by Kash Patel.

Additional disturbing details have also emerged:

  • A neighbor’s Ring camera footage from that night mysteriously disappeared.

  • Investigators are examining a possible internet outage in the neighborhood during the time Nancy vanished.

  • Detectives are analyzing physical evidence recovered from the home, including potential DNA traces.

Despite receiving thousands of tips, authorities have not made any arrests and Nancy’s whereabouts remain unknown.

The veteran journalist has appeared in multiple video appeals alongside her siblings, pleading for help from the public.

“I wanted you to know that I’m still standing, and I still have hope, and I’m still me,” she said.
“I’m holding onto my faith. I still believe.”

She then quoted her mother’s favorite words:

“As my mom would say, ‘Where else would I go?’”
