Chapter 18 - The True Face of Grant Ashford

|
I gave a small nod to the audio technician stationed in the back of the room.
The large screens behind the stage instantly changed. The heartwarming charity videos disappeared, replaced by a massive, complex financial diagram of North Star Transit Solutions, clearly showing its illicit connections to Ashford Aeronautics, offshore Cayman accounts, and Meridian Apex Industries.
Every single claim displayed had been meticulously reviewed by our counsel. Every transaction shown was supported by a verified document already delivered to federal regulators.
A breaking financial news alert appeared in bold red letters beneath the diagram:
HARTWELL PRECISION TERMINATES ALL ASHFORD AERONAUTICS CONTRACTS AMID MASSIVE FEDERAL COMPLIANCE INVESTIGATION.
Phones began vibrating and ringing wildly throughout the ballroom.
One furious investor shouted from the crowd, “Grant! Our shares are down thirty percent in aftermarket trading!”
Another board member demanded loudly to know why rejected, dangerous components had been secretly routed through a shell company registered to his wife.
Grant panicked, turning frantically toward Sophie, who was still standing quietly in the crowd. “Tell them this is a misunderstanding! Tell them you handled the North Star accounts!”
For years, those exact words would have been enough to break her. Sophie would have stepped forward, apologized profusely, taken the blame, and allowed him to speak his lies through her.
This time, she remained perfectly still.
“Tell them!” Grant repeated, his voice cracking with desperation.
Sophie slowly walked toward the stage. She did not hurry. When she reached the microphone, her hands trembled slightly, and she allowed everyone to see them tremble. Courage, she had finally learned, was not the absence of visible fear.
“My name appears on North Star’s official records,” Sophie said, her voice clear and strong. “But I did not create the company. I did not authorize the illegal shipments, and I did not knowingly sign the fraudulent loans. My husband deliberately used my identity, my personal devices, and my absolute trust to build a criminal shield around himself.”
Grant laughed, but it was too loud and entirely unconvincing. “Sophie has been struggling emotionally for years! Everyone close to us knows that!”
“I have struggled,” she agreed, looking directly at the investors. “I struggled because you deliberately isolated me from my friends, controlled all our finances, and actively taught me to doubt my own memory. Then, you weaponized that struggle as evidence that I could not be trusted.”
Celeste moved forward, trying to intervene. “This is a corporate event! This is not the time for petty marital grievances!”
Sophie turned her gaze to her mother-in-law. “You accepted massive, undocumented consulting payments from one of the shell companies, Celeste. You actively pressured me to sign legal documents I was not permitted to read. Do not call this a marital grievance. Call it what it is: a conspiracy.”
Celeste’s lips parted to argue, but no words came out.
Grant lunged forward, reaching aggressively for Sophie’s arm to pull her away from the microphone. A Hartwell security officer stepped smoothly between them, blocking his path.
“This is blatant defamation!” Grant shouted to the room. “There is absolutely no proof that I authorized anything she is claiming!”
I nodded to the technician again.

Grant’s own recorded voice from the previous night filled the silent ballroom, echoing off the chandeliers:
“Yes, Sophie. I signed your name. I used your devices, your accounts, and your perfect little reputation.”
