Chapter 4 - The Hale Empire Bleeds

|

The sun rose over Chicago the following morning, casting a deceptive light over a city that operated entirely in the shadows. I was sitting at the kitchen island of my small apartment, wearing an oversized sweater and drinking black coffee. My phone buzzed constantly with text messages from coworkers who had heard rumors about the gala, but I ignored all of them.

Across town, inside the penthouse of the Hale Hospitality Group, Richard Hale was having a much worse morning.

I didn't have to be in the room to know exactly what was happening. It was the classic Carter strategy: swift, silent, and economically devastating.

By 9:00 AM, three of the major food distributors that supplied the Hale family’s luxury hotels suddenly terminated their contracts due to "unforeseen supply chain disruptions." At 10:15 AM, the sanitation workers union, heavily influenced by my father’s associates, announced a spontaneous strike exclusively targeting Hale properties. Trash began piling up outside the glittering entrances of five-star establishments.

But the fatal blow landed just before noon.

Richard Hale received a call from his primary lender. The massive commercial loan he needed to finalize the construction of a new resort in Miami had been unexpectedly frozen. The bank cited internal risk assessment protocols, but Richard wasn't stupid. He knew exactly who controlled the invisible strings of the city's financial sector.

Rumors had already reached Richard about his son’s behavior at the Bellweather Grand. He had dismissed them initially, assuming Preston had just upset a minor socialite. But when his entire empire began hemorrhaging money in the span of four hours, Richard realized the terrifying truth.

Preston hadn't just insulted a guest. He had thrown wine in the face of Michael Carter’s only child.

I received a text message from Daniel just after lunch.

“Your father requests your presence at the main estate at 3:00 PM. Dress appropriately.”

I stared at the screen, my stomach twisting into a painful knot. I knew what was coming. It was the ritual of apology. My father never sought out his enemies when they offended him; he made them crawl to his front door.

I changed into a tailored black dress, something severe and formal, perfectly suited for a funeral. Because in many ways, we were about to bury the Hale family's pride.

When I arrived at the sprawling, gated Carter estate in the northern suburbs, the driveway was empty except for a single black Mercedes. I walked through the heavy oak doors, greeted by silent, heavily armed guards who nodded respectfully as I passed.

I made my way to my father’s private study. The heavy mahogany doors were slightly ajar. I pushed them open and stepped inside, bracing myself for the spectacle of a man losing everything because of his arrogant son.
