Chapter 18

CHAPTER 19: The New Blueprint

With the new year came a profound shift in our household. The millions of dollars in restitution from the civil suit had cleared into our accounts, but Sarah had absolutely no interest in early retirement or idle luxury. The fire that had been ignited during our investigation into Vanguard hadn't burned out; it had simply changed shape.

It was nearly midnight. The house was quiet, save for the soft tapping of the rain against the windowpanes. I found Sarah at the dining room table. It was covered in scattered architectural blueprints, legal pads, and financial projections.

"You're working late," I said, pulling out a chair and sitting across from her.

She looked up, a sharp, brilliant energy dancing in her eyes. It was the same analytical look she used to get when we were piecing together Vance's encrypted hard drives, but this time, it was aimed at creation, not destruction.

"I've been talking with Marcus and a few of the whistleblowers from Vanguard," she said, tapping a pen against a legal pad. "I know what I want to do with the settlement money."

I leaned forward, looking at the papers. "Okay. Walk me through it."

"I'm opening a firm," she said, her voice steady and electric. "Not a law firm, exactly. An advocacy and investigative group. There are thousands of people out there who are crushed by corporate medical negligence every year. People who are handed a defective prosthetic, a faulty implant, a toxic drug, and then buried in legal paperwork by corporate lawyers until they give up."

She slid a piece of paper across the table. It was a drafted mission statement.

"We lived through the siege, Julian," she continued, her gaze locking onto mine. "We know exactly how these corporations hide their data. We know how they intimidate victims. I want to build a team of forensic accountants, medical experts, and litigators. When a company tries to bury a victim, we dig them out. We level the playing field."

I looked at the notes. The scope of it was massive. It was ambitious, dangerous, and incredibly hard work. It was also the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

"What are you calling it?" I asked.

May you like

Sarah smiled. "The Vanguard Accountability Project. I'm taking his name, and I'm turning it into the weapon that hunts people like him."

I reached across the table and took her hand. "When do we start?"
